Ok so I've been eyeing some SnG satellites recently that basically only pay winner (2nd breaks even or loses part of buy-in) and I wonder if there's a different approach to take to winner take all SnGs? My guess would be to go at them more aggressively and be more willing to shove around and gamble, because winning is all that pays, and winning takes a lot of chips fast.
For example, there's a $14+1 9 man sat into the MSOP ME that pays a $109 buy-in to winner, and only $17 to second. If I play 6 of these and only win 1, I've only spent $90 for entrance into a $109 tournament, a $19 profit and 21% ROI.
I guess I'm looking for advice about how to play winner-take-all style intelligently. For example, should I maybe call in situations where I'm a 2-1 or 3-1 dog because the one time that it does come through I'll be in a good position to win?
Same question applies to MTT satellites that give seats to the top 1-4%.
Thanks

IN the winner take all sng's you have to play more aggressively in order to play for a win. That's really all there is to it. Don't get your money in bad just because you think you need to accumulate more chips; that's flawed thinking.
MTT satellites are quite different unless you mean shootouts. |

Take a look at the 'Poker after dark' series.
Watch them play and how they respond to aggression.
to me they play the same like sit & go's until 3 players left, from then it becomes an other ball game.
How to play here for the winning place really depends on your opponent(s) left. Base your actions on them, because only one style of playing will not be enough.
I would rather not play these sit & go's, because if someone busts your quality hand with a lucky draw, you'll have to start all over again. The opposite is also true, but if you're a descent player that should happen a lot less.
If this happens in a regular s&g i can live with second place and 30% of the prize money, because i know i will bust him another time when i have the best hand. |
