So I had a week and a half where i played mostly .50/.50 mixed games live and a few hours of 1/2 NLH. I ran crazy hot over the week and a half, up $1050 over 5 sessions. My reads were on, I was getting slapped by every deck wherever I played, and I was playing basically mistake free poker. I even took 1 bad beat in a 1/2 mixed game where I had the nut flush on the turn and a guy hit his four outter to boat up and stacked me. I rebought and eventually left up $250 for the night. I was proud of myself since a year or so ago I doubt I'd have been able to come back from a beat like that.
Last night I was in a .50.50 mixed game down 2 buy-in's, and made it back to even. I started giving more action than was necessary and calling in some spots where i knew I was beat...ended up down 3 buy-in's before i decided to call it a night and do a little self-evaluation. It was a fast loose game with players that I play with a lot and for some reason I was not putting them on hands very well after making a couple of bad calls. I felt it necessary to get up and walk away before i lost the rest of what I brought with me. The hit I took didn't hurt too bad as I'm still up 900, but it still could have been avoided. I think I walked at the right time though. They tried to get me to stay but I told them I was getting beat up so I cashed out for the $35 I had left and walked.
Your thoughts? Advice? I've never had a run like I had this week, I'd like it to continue, but I think a couple days off would do me good. Family's in town and my wife is worried I'm playing too much, and I would have to agree, lol. |

Congrats on your hot streak. NICE.
Whether on a hot streak, a cold streak, a rush - what have you...
Poker does not come down to winning or losing, it comes down to making good decisions. (Scott Fischman said this in his book and I happen to like living by this... makes the crazy beat a little bearable... ha)
Once you are not making good decisions - you are no longer on said streak or rush. You have to back up and reassess. Good for you for recognizing it's time to slow down.
My advice? tighten up and get back to basics. Re-examine what / and how you are opening the pot with -- what you are calling with, what position you are playing in... etc... Your opponents who you "play often with" are now getting better reads ON YOU - you have to readjust. |

Thanks! I definitely try to keep that quote in mind when i'm at the table and play every hand as best I can, i just suppose I threw discipline out the window last night a little.
I'll definitely keep it in mind next time I play against these folks if anyone's able to put me on a hand. It happens once in a while, but not very often. I like to mix up my play, sometimes purposely get caught bluffing that doesn't cost very much short term, but's very profitable for the rest of the session. Open in pots with small suited connectors and aces, then limp with both of them, that way no one knows if I smash a flop or not. I love being unreadable . But definitely will keep it in mind for next time because last night I was definitely off my A-game. Thanks for the input!! |

You're welcome -- Best of luck with your game and future hot streaks!
I think it's normal for all of us to "throw" discipline out the window and even tilt once in a while... I don't think there's a poker player alive (Pro or otherwise) who haven't had their moments.
Good news is, Poker is a game of "long term" and "good decisions" short losing spurts and a few questionable decisions happen as hiccups.
Every mistake is an opportunity to learn something and get better for the next session if you aren't too proud to recognize it. |
