I am still learning the basic strategy of Omaha 8, but have found that these games at the micro limit stakes are extremely soft, especially when the games comes up at a HORSE ring table. I try not to play many hands, including hands with a pure low value (say 2-3-6-7). I try to play a suited ace and any A-2. Any big pairs I will play, but try to keep a tighter starting hand range for these games. I think as long as your are patient and try not to get too cute when playing, there is some money to be made at these games. Solid, basic omaha8 strategy is all you need.

So, my question is this: Does anyone play any Limit Omaha8 tourneys, and if so, how is the play? In the cash games I see, people will overbet with any made flush (even if it's 6-7), will still be raising on a paired board with a straight or flush, or will even call multiple bets on a board with a flush and/or straight. Those are just some of my observations, and will be curious to see what others think.

I've only played one O8B tournament b/c I don't usually have time for them. But the one I played was during the first week of my O8B endeavor. I placed somewhere around 5th. I also played one O8B SNG and won that. So yeah, I think any O8B game is going to be soft compared to an NLHE game.

You can play for just the low, but not hands like 2-3-6-7. You want at least 3 wheel cards but preferably 4. You'll make money when everyone else is putting their money in on the high and you win the low. And then when you hit a wheel and scoop the pot, it's an amazing feeling.

Also, with your big pairs and your A-2 hands, make sure the other 2 cards are co-ordinated somehow. Don't play 2-card Omaha; it's a bad idea. In other words, if you hold J-J-8-2, it's better to just toss it, even if it's suited. You aren't going to win the low, you have a terrible straight possibility, jack-high flushes are losing hands in O8B, and a set of Jacks doesn't win enough in O8B.

On the other hand, J-J-A-2, J-J-A-3, J-J-A-K, etc. Even J-J-2-3 would be decent.

Hellmuth has a good O8B section in his book.
