I am looking into getting a laptop. I was wondering what i should go with? PC or Mac? Any insight on this matter would be very helpful. If you could list the pros and cons of both and let me know what you own if you have one.
Thanks |

Well, basically for me it boils down to what you're going to do. If you're going to do professional stuff such as web design, web graphics, a little movie editing or sound recording than I would go mac all the way. However, if you're going to browse the net, play some games (not a good idea on a laptop anyway unless you get one with a great graphics card) or just the normal day to day stuff, I'd go PC.
I use a PC for graphic design anyway but IF I had a choice I would use a mac. But like I said if it is the normal day to day stuff for school, internet, some gaming, just go pc. You're probably more familiar with a pc anyway, but if its for professional work, go mac IMO.
-Mac
- more for professional work such as web design/ graphics/ etc...
-PC
- More for the basic computer needs such as internet and poker and such.. |

| Don't believe the hype. Years ago mac was the way to go when it came to doing stuff like video editing, graphic or web design. Today, it doesn't matter. PC laptops are cheaper, and can do anything macs can do. Also, it's a lot easier to get pirated software for PC computer. Might not sound like a big deal, but if you wanna get into some funky stuff the software is mucho $$$. Photoshop alone costs like $650. |

This is true, but professionally if it was strictly for professional use like I said I would much rather have the stability of the mac, also note that the security that a mac provides is fantastic, comes in handy when you're dealing with clients and you need that security.
But I do agree if it was anything else you need to do, PC. Now, I'm not saying you can't do professional work on a pc because I do it all the time, it's just a little easier and more reliable with a mac if you're strictly doing professional work with this new laptop. |

Well jeez I wasn't going to get involved in this because I'm a bit biased, but then you had to go and bump the damn thing. How can I resist that...
I work in an industry where 99 out of 100 people use Macs-- that's because it is the perception that Macs are better for professional use. You want pros and cons?
MAC PROS: they look pretty.
MAC CONS: slow, sluggish, has compatibility issues even with it's own operating system, less software available, expensive.
OK, so I don't like Macs and a lot of the above is opinionated, but the undeniable fact is that I work twice as fast as all my colleagues, I crash less, and I spend less time down. |

What, are Macs still in existance. Sadly it's no contest. It's like the Beta vs VHS war of the 80's or the DVD -r +r war that was decided last year. With a Mac, you are always going to have issues with software not being available on the Mac. Yes there are conversion options however these reduce the capability of the Mac. And these days the standard Mac ain't able to put the PC to shame in performance.
Unless you are a high end user that requires the Mac for a specific purpose that the PC can't do, you should take the PC any day. |

Just one thing. Don't get anything that requires it's own 'special' setup disk. If anything happens and the disk doesn't work then you have effectively lost your computer. These are essentially those phone or mail order computers that you see on TV.
If you were in Australia, I'd say to just look at the computer stores in the local area and select one that's clean & professional in appearance.
Brand names... Brand names are largely just a sticker. Just avoid any supercheap brands. The difference is just that the cheap names have obsolute technology or have had faults in the batch (not that they actually test what's made anymore).
Thats about as much as you can do. |

I cannot say enough about Dell computers... I would not say they are the BEST computers out there, but for the price I would say nothing else compares to them. I have 3 myself, inlcluding a laptop, and I recommend them to all my friends and family, and everyone is happy with them. (I have 10 computers in my studio, but most are custom built... as far as consumer products though, I think Dell is the best... I also use three Dell monitors and they are great.)
Just remember that all computers are not built equal, even if they have comparable stats. I don't have a ton of experience, but these are the brands that I've personally dealt with in the past, I'm sure others with more experience could help you more:
GOOD: Sony, Dell.
OK: Hewlett Packard, IBM.
BAD: Gateway, Compaq, Acer.
THE WORST SHIT YOU COULD EVER BUY: eMachine. |

| Yeah eMachines are really bad. My mom had bought one a few years back and it would spontaniously reboot itself. Mega POS. |

Dell??? Are you insane. What you must consider is what happens should problems occur. And it's this aspect that Dell fails. Of course, if you are going to throw the computer away after the warrantee it doesn't matter so much.
Dell is one of those brands that normally have their own setup programming system and it's this aspect that can reduce a perfectly working computer to the status of junk material.
Also just noticed that you want a laptop. Couple of things. Laptops ain't as fast or reliable as standard PC's. Laptops have a high failure rate. Also, get a seperate mouse (the laptop mouse touchpad is dreadful). Look for something that gives you operating system options. With laptops, this isn't easy. There are some absolutely horrid options out there.
Finally a laptop is really only something to take with you when you go somewhere. If this isn't you, don't get a laptop, get a standard PC. |

| No experience with Dell support because the three Dell computers I own have always worked flawlessly (one for over 4 years). Same with my mother's, my sister's, and my mother-in-law's... and they load their computers up with so much crap you could probably catch a virus just from touching them... |
