I've got a quick question for the forum. One day last week, during a hand, I was in the small blind with a marginal hand. I don't remember what it was, but I wouldn't have played it from any other position (except BB, of course). I wouldn't have called a raise, but I was willing to complete with it. When I did, the BB got disconnected. He stayed disconnected long enough for the system to automatically check for him.

So, here's my question. In the case above, if I bet, then the system will automatically fold his hand because he hasn't reconnected, yet, so I win. On the other hand, I missed the flop entirely, so the correct play is to check and fold if he bets. So, is it bad etiquette to bet and take advantage of a guy who has been disconnected, or is it just his bad luck?

bet...there is no real ettiquette for this. Just like if someone gets up from the table to use the restroom or smoke, their hand is going to be folded no matter what. They won't check them in even if they are in the BB. So bet.

Bet it all day. Surely you at least occationally bet with nothing into one opponent who has shown no strength? If it makes you feel better, convince yourself that this was one of those times you would have bet anyways.

On the other hand, if you flop quads, I'd probably just wait and hope he reconnects.

Fold your small blind until your opponent reconnects, or at least for a few minutes. What you gain in good karma more than makes up for the blinds you can steal. Poker is one long never-ending game. A few bbs here and there won't matter much in the future, but good karma just might make all the difference in the world. Success in tourney poker is all about getting lucky and being at the right place at the right time. That's often the case with a lot of things in life.

And as you are waiting for him the blinds don't wait, they keep getting bigger. Bet get the hand over with and move on to the next. The disconnect time clock is a protection against disconnects, no need to protect someone further. It will happen to you one day and you will lose that BB you just stole, so it all evens out in the end.

I agree, especially when I'm at the right place at the right time when my opponent has connection problems.

lol, yeah.

As for Riddim's comment, I'm only half serious. I do give my opponents a little time to reconnect, especially if I'm playing a forum event. But, after a bit I will steal their blinds. I mean, I don't want the thing to go on forever.

The other half is just me playing devil's advocate.

This would be foolish, when all is warranted is a minimum raise. He'll probably re-connect right as you shove, and wake up with a monster.
