To qualify for the low there must be 3 cards on the board that are 8 or less and unpaired. Then you must have 2 more cards in your hole hand that are 8 and under and not paired with the cards on the board.

The best possible low hand is A2345 and the worst possible low hand is 87654.

Not every hand dealt qualifies to have a low hand,
for instance

the board A,2,2,9,K No possible way for a low hand. The 2's are paired only one of them can be considered for the low hand. The 9 and K do not qualify for low.

or

The board A, 3,3, 5 10 It is possible to have a low hand on this board provided the player has either any two of these cards 2,4,6,7,8 and if a player has 2,4 then he would have A2345 for low, the nut low in fact. EVen though the 3 paired the A and 5 count along with one of the 3's for the low.

I hope this did not confuse you more than it helped....
Peace

Another thing to keep in mind is that the 5 cards (which MUST include exactly 3 from the community cards, and exactly 2 from your own hand) for the high hand, and the 5 cards low hand can be different.

also, straight's and flushes do not count against your hand, and aces are low.

(in some games aces are considered high like in Deuce to Six lowball)

Is there a site that can explain how to determine the lowest low? I am hosting an educational game this Saturday and want to post the clear rules for determining the lowest low.

Thanks,

See you at the tables

Go by top card first, then 2nd highest, 3rd, etc..

8432A loses to 65432
87652 loses to 8765A
8632A loses to 85432

etc...

It's pretty basic, just by looking at one's hand, combined with the board.

I'll give a few examples.

Board Cards
TJ35A.......best low is 24
86642.......best low is A3
A2365.......best low is A4/24/34/54, they all end up being A2345
8675J........best low is A2
JJ982........no low possible

You must have 5 cards 8 high or lower, all of different values. You must also use exactly (2) cards from your hand, combined with exactly (3) board cards.
