|
|
Every time i look at the finishes of the pros on FTP MTT only a few seem to finish in the money. In fact a lot of the time i see them finishing near the bottom of the list. Anyone have an idea why this is?
My theory is that if you sit at a table full of fish who are always in pots they shouldnt be you will be sucked out more often. Take pocket A's. Although a fav preflop their % goes down when more people take the flop.
Many people disagree with me here but ive seen it enough at low limit to know its happening. You make a hearty raise with your AA and 4 people call with King, Queen or suited connectors (or unconnected). And ofcourse they get cracked. |

I'd say it's a combination of a couple things:
1. Everyone's gunning for the pros. It feels good taking a pro out. I took Seidel out of a sng once, and even though there's no bounty in sngs, it felt pretty good.
2. I think pros have more of a 'go big or go home' attitude in tourneys. Many online players (myself included) let themselves get down too low in chips. I was reading an article on Howard Lederer's website, and he mentioned how during, I think it was the 2003 WSOP, he was getting low on chips, and desperate to make a move. When I did the math, he still had 10 times the blinds and antes.
If you don't make the money, you might as well be dead last. |

| The pros don't pay that much attention in the lower buy-in tournaments. They chat and still play their hands, but they aren't really playing their best games. In the higher buy-in tournies, the pros success has actually been quite good, Allen Cunningham won his way into the WSOP Main Event through FTP. |

| I heard from Ephro that at the WSOP Main Event this year, 60% of the players who went out on day 1 went out holding AA. |

Wow, no one has yet mentioned bounties!
(In MTTs on Full Tilt, a player who busts a pro gets a cash bounty of one buy-in -- plus a custom t-shirt.)
Sure, the bounty can occasionally work in a pro's favor by inducing a call from a weaker hand that would otherwise fold. But on average the pro must bet (risk) more than other players in order to give an opponent the same pot odds (including the bounty's effect), or, if all-in, is giving the opponent better pot odds than a non-pro would be giving. Or to put it another way, the pro must hold better hands than other players who make the same bets in otherwise similar situations.
In sum, the bounty is a net disadvantage to the pro which results in a worse average finish. |

| A bit of luck is required to win a MTT. In addition, some of the MTTs are low buyin events. A couple of hours is enough teaching time. Think about it, if you normally play $100/200 NL, how much time would you spend on a $20 buy in MTT? |
