Ok so I am playing 25NL and i get dealt pocket A's on the button. No raises to me but a lot of limpers so I want to narrow the field and I raise to 1.25, 5x the big blind. The player on my immediate right, a pretty solid player, is the only caller. Flop comes A 10 2 rainbow. He checks and I check. The next card is a Jack which puts two clubs out there and he bets out 1.25 or half the pot and i raise to 3.50 and he calls. Next card is a club and he bets out 8 dollars and I just call. He flips over KQ offsuit and takes the pot I was sure was mine. He had me covered and i only lost half my stack so thank god i just called on the river.
Now I am a strong believer in slow playing in online poker is instant death unless the board is harmless. My question is did i play this wrong? That seemed like a harmless flop for my trip aces where i could get maximun profit.
Any advice on how I could have played the hand better? |

Can't say I would have played your hand any better, but I would have bet like half the pot to see where your opponent was at.
But overall you were trying to get maximum value for your set so there really wasn't a wrong way for you to play that. |

| $8 is a lot to call with a possible flush and straight out there, especially a high straight, but you were correct to check the flop and he got lucky with the rivered straight. |

| Only thing you could of done different was bet the flop but 9 out of 10 times I most likely would of made the same play with position. You just got unlucky and I would of reraised the turn and then just called the rvier when he lead out. Sets are extremely difficult to get away from in a cash game. |

| In a cash game? Are you suggesting that it would be easier to get away from a set in a tournament? |

| A little bit easier cause you can't just rebuy into the tournament as a cash game you can. |

| I'd definitely say that it's the other way around. You tend to be a lot deeper in cash games, plus you don't have to accumulate chips the way you do in a tournament. |

| I don't like a check on that flop. Since your oppenent called your raise preflop he has some sort of hand. If he has an ace you're going to get his money either way. If he has a smaller pair you're not going to make any money unless he hit one of his "outs". If he has a drawing hand you're giving him a free chance to hit. The only way you're getting anymore money out of him by checking is if he hits an "out", or he makes a hand that beats your set. I'd bet this flop, and wouldn't hate to see a fold, and happy if he called. |

| I completely agree with jspring. YOU NEVER WANT TO GIVE FREE CARDS unless there is no possibility of a straight or flush out there. |

Great point and that's exactly what I was going to say. Sometimes we might get a little disappointed to get such a "monster" and not get any "action" on it. This is just another example of when you're better off making him pay for his bad draw or ending the hand without a showdown, instead of getting down on yourself because you gave him a free look at it. |

| It also goes without saying that at micro limits everything is a little skewed in favor of the draw, so "perfectly played" hands will quite often lose to fish. It's just cheap to call. |

| you could have raised more on the turn as well.....it sometimes gives you a better idea of where you stand. |
