I've decided that when I put some $ on FTP, that I would be mainly a SNG player, with the occasional razz cash game. Any tips/ pointers for razz, especially low limit razz? It is not my best game by any means.

1) 8 low really isn't that good. Neither is 76 low.
2)Don't EVER call a completed bet with a face card showing.
3)Don't start with ( 58 )2 unless it's shorthanded.

Basically, play like a rock when you start out. Feel free to cry when you get (AA)A.

Can you elaborate on why not to play ( 5 8 ) 2 unless it's short-handed?

I've read that the first beginner rule of which hands to play is 3 cards 8 or below. I could see how (6 7)8 wouldn't be the best, but with ( 5 8 ) 2 you have two to a wheel, if you make an 8 it will likely be a solid 8 (may not win, but it's not ( 7 8 ) 2 ), and your low door card might allow you to steal the pot if people brick, or even if you pair your 5.

Would you suggest only playing 3 to a 7?

Well, I sat down at a play money razz game today at 4 with a buy-in of 1,000. I left the table at 5 with around 5,000. This is my longest experience with a razz game, and I found that the few (only about 5 or 6) hands I did play, I won, and pulled in about a 800 chip pot each time. The players at my table were suprisingly anti-play chippers, and weren't crazy by any means. The knew what the were doing, and it was a fortunate draw. I still need to test myself more before I am willing to put any real money into it, but it does seem profitable so far. I know that at times it can cause pulling-out-of-the-hair moments, but I have the patience, so hopefully it will work out.

Another hour, and my razz 'roll is down from 5k to 3k. Not as many good cards, and a looser table sucking out every hand. I had to contend with the bring-in every other hand, so I'm gonna take a break.

(8-9 p.m.)

Went from 3k at a full table to 10k when players began to leave, and it got to heads up. I'd probably assume that hands like 7 and 8 low have more value heads up, but everytime I showed down a 7, 8 or 9 low, it was beat. When I finally left after 10 minutes of heads up, I ended up with just 6,900 in chips.

This has been a learning experience to say the least, and I am gonna continue these hour-long sessions about 2 times a day, but I am gonna stop posting these jesus expirement type posts because nobody gives a rats ass about play money..... 8)

(58 ) 2 is a hand that seems much better than it is and is very easy to get in trouble with for a beginner. I don't like 8 low - it's kind of like playing ATo in hold 'em. It's a hand that may end up being good, but even a smooth 8 low (not to mention the DRAW to the 8 low) can be a very expensive second best hand. For a beginner, I think it's best to avoid that situation altogether. When you get some more experience, you may find that you can tell when your 8-4 is good and when it isn't, but until you get there, it's best not to get into that situation.
