I've been playing texas hold'em and stud games for a while. But recently I decided to give omaha a try, and, turns out, I love it. But I am a complete novice, only understanding the basics. Does anyone recommend a good book, magazine, or website I can get to start studying? I know playing is a good way to learn, but I don't want to be a complete donkey and dead money. I've tried my local bookstores, but all they had were hold'em books.
Thanks! |

| The section in Super System 2 is exelent. It gives a great overview of odds, starting hands, and other basics that lead to winning play. I've also heard that T.J. Clutier's (unsure how his name is spelt) Omaha book is very insightful, yet a bit advanced. |

I think a must have for anybody trying a new game is Phil Hellmuth's 'Play Poker Like the Pros'. Phil breaks each game down (he covers holdem, Omaha, Omaha8, stud, stud8, and razz), making it easy for beginners to understand. He also provides readers with a list of starting hands worth playing, and a tight strategy to stick to.
Phil's book isn't as thorough or advanced as other books, but it's great for beginners. It's probably the first book anyone learning to play poker should read. |

The SS2 section on Omaha is a nice starting point, but TJ's book isn't. It basically tells you to nutpeddle or draw to the nuts and shut down whenever scare cards hit. If you just read that last sentence you no longer need to buy TJ's book and I saved you money.
To be fair, nutpeddling is fine for the low levels as people will continuously pay you off on the nuts. However, if you ever plan to make it past .50/$1 (or maybe $1/$2,) you'll have to change gears or you're going to get slaughtered by your predictable and exploitable post-flop play. I'd also stick to playing PLO on Party Poker if you're learning because many of the people that play $1/$2 or $2/$4 and up will definitely move to lower levels to crush them if there are no games going on. |

Championship Omaha - TJ Cloutier and Tom McEvoy
This is the best book I've ever read about learning the fundamentals of playing sound Omaha, in all forms. Yes TJ and Tom stress peddling the nuts and shutting down when scare cards hit. Thats playing fundamentally sound poker. More importantly TJ stresses knowing your opponents, their tendencies, the hands they play, the hands they will raise and the hands they will stand a raise with. Knowing all that information you can change gears and
"earn" many pots by shutting them out with a pot size raise or getting them to call you with second nuts. On a few occasions TJ tells stories on how he's picked up tells and tendencies from players and used it to his advantage. I think this information is good for all players given how volatile Omaha can be. Its also very good tournament strategy because we all know you can't go to your pocket in a tournament (unless there's a rebuy).
I've read the section and Super System 2 and its also very good information on PLO. It is written by Lyle Berman, who TJ Cloutier mentions is the best high stakes Omaha player. |
