| And just to be a bit more specific, regarding string bets, you can't say, "I call your 15 and raise 30 more". This is also a string bet. Whatever you say first is binding, so in this case you will only be able to call. |
A first time player tried to do that to me a few weeks ago. He said I call your 75 dollars and raise you all in. Well I was just trying to steal the pot with a middle pocket pair with an Ace on the board. He was pissed that they wouldn't let him push all in because of his verbal string bet. The turn came a six, giving me a set. I told him that was a silly rule and that I would respect his attempt to move all in and I put all my chips in. Of course he called with AK and lost about 500. |
Priceless...
As I'm looking over the advice that has been given, the OP must be crapping himself... So much to remember, and so much that the internet game doesn't prepare you for... Dude, the main thing you gotta remember, above everything else, is try to stay relaxed. Maybe I'm a bad example, but my first few times I was a mess with nerves (though I'm usually a pretty nervous guy anyway...). Just try to fit in, don't look nervous, somone said don't let anyone know it's your first time, that's good advice. Just follow everyone else's lead, and you'll be fine. Don't worry about the money. This is the advanced class, and it will (should at least) cost you...
Good luck out there... And you better come back and let us know how you did... |

Yes! For Christ's sake, don't go in there with a Unabomber hoodie... They will laugh at you! And don't wear sunglasses at the 1/2NL table... |

My personal opinion (and/or) hot buttons:
(a) Be polite (or at least civil) to the people around you. Don't get into arguments with other players about whether they should or should not have bet into a particular hand, or whether they sucked out, or whether their mother used to walk the streets of West Hollywood... Smile and act nice. Don't call anyone a fish, a donkey, a n00b...
(b) It is fairly rude to ask to see a hand that someone has mucked, even in a show-down. Don't do it.
(c) Don't offer a commentary on the play, and don't say "I wish I hadn't folded that Ace of Clubs" even if it is not true.
(d) Don't boast about how you're an ace player online (even if it is true)
Ghod, I sound like my Mother. Basically, be a quiet nice person and watch what is going on. Be friendly between hands, quiet during the hands, and if you see an older guy with short blond/white hair, thick glasses and an English accent, usually wearing a hawaiian shirt, give him all your chips because he never bluffs. |

| I think you should always berate players who suck out on you because that's what we see on TV. Also, make sure you bet or fold whenever you feel like it not just when it's your turn. |

| Always chat it up with the waitress, especially when it is your turn to act. If you get kicked out for holding up a game, I personally like to take a drunken piss on the most expensive looking car I can find in the parking lot. |

| I was really nervous the first time I went there. I expected to lose some money, as it was my first time and I was treating it like a learning experience. I'm sure these have all been said, but dont act out of turn. The game is going to be going fast, so pay attention. If you are in a blind(big or small) and it folds around to you, ask for a chop. Have fun, and dont be intimidated. |

Think of it more as a pleasurable learning experience, and dont get overly worried about anything.
Have FUN. |

Well I'm back...and with $73 less in my pocket. There's many things I messed up on. I wasn't looking at the pot when betting so I might have givin people the correct odds to draw out on me.
One hand I had AA and got As 9s to call me along with another guy.
Flop is K low low 1 spade
next card is a mid card spade
next card Q spade
I played the hand stong till the end, and ended up folding to a big bet.
Another hand I got in trouble with was KK vs Q 10 on a Q 6 Q flop...thought he had a mid pair.
All in all it was fun, but next time I need to bring more than 40x BB and focus more on bets based on the size of the pot |

This is something that I struggle with when playing live... Playing online really makes me lazy when it comes to how big the players stacks are and how big the pot is.... Definitely something I need to work on.
Congratulations on a successful first trip... You had fun and you learned a lot (I'm sure), and at the very least you got your feet wet in the big boys pool... And it didn't cost you too much... You'll do better next time for sure.
Good luck. |
