Hey all,

Just starting to get into limit poker after playing strictly no limit. I feel I'm pretty successful at the NL side of things, usually able to double up in a session ..

How many big bets/hour on average should a decent limit player be profiting??

All the written stuff say you should be making 1 BB/hour. Personally I think it will depend on what limit your playing at, what kind of table your playing at and your skill level. If your beating a particular limit consistently, you should be able to make several BB/hour and ready to go to the next level. When you go to the next level your skill level will be relatively the same as the people already playing there thus your BB/hour will drop until you adjust to that new level. But also remember, the higher you go the lower the ratio will be. It's the nature of the game. The higher you go the better the players who are not willing to pay you off.

Another things that effects your BB/hour ration is the number of players playing. What I talked about above is a full ring game (9+ players). In a 6-handed or less then your BB/hour should be higher than 1 BB/hour since your likely playing more hands (since your playing shorthanded) but variance will be higher as well.

I'm amazed that the average is so low. I would have thought a little higher.

Sorry if I'm coming across like some kind of high-roller (believe me - I'm not!) But how does anyone build their bankroll with such small avg winnings?

I can average about 1 Buy-in in about 2 hours on a limit game and thats 20xBB

Most limit players do it by BB (big bets)/100 hands.

If you're pulling in 2-3BB/100 hands over tens of thousands of hands, it's safe to say you're a winner at that limit. As far as how limit players make money, well they'll end up playing higher limits, playing short-handed, or multitabling.

For example: If you can single table a full-ring $10/$20 and beat it for 2bb/100, you'll probably be averaging about $30/hour (most ring limit games are about 60-70 hands an hour.) If you play shorthanded and can beat $10/$20 shorthanded for 2bb/100 you may get an average as high as $40/hour.

Likewise you can learn to multitable successfully, and play an insane amount of tables because Limit's mathematical nature allows it. Say you can 4-table $3/$6 games and still win 2bb/100. Well now because you'll be seeing up to 300 hands/hr on average, you'll be pulling in $36/hour just from the $3/$6 games.

krazybangs, you are telling me you earn an average of 10BB every hour? ( you did said a buyin of 20BB every two hours). Do you ever lose? Not trying to bust on your poker skills, but sounds like you are overestimating.
And why would he be referring to buyin? Everyone buys in different for limit

Older books like Super System and even the movie Rounders puts the desirable win rate at 1 BB/hr. The problem with this is that the games they are talking about here are very high limits with very good players.

I've heard anywhere from 3 BB/hr to 5 BB/hr as a desirable win rate for online poker. At the lower levels with less skillful players, it might be 5 BB/hr or even higher. As you move up, the desirable win rate should drop to around 3 BB/hr to compensate for the rise in limits and the rise in the skill level of your opponents.

I usually have a bad table if I am at least on 3. But my last 2 sessions were normal.

But I left up over my buy ins... and since I didnt avg in the losing table (wasnt paying attention to avg it out right that mroning) So on the 3 tables I bought it with 40 on each and left with 32.50, 64, and 67.25 after an hour.

Iw as going on my buy in, not on BB played.

But remember... its online so we play more hands and more tables than normal so win loss is at a higher rate of hands played.

I agree that you should be able to make mroe than 1 BB/hour if you are a winning player, if only because the play is so much faster than live. I'd say that 5 BB/hour is a very nice income rate, especially if you're playing above $2/$4.
