Most, if not all, bad beats stories are like this:

Player A holds a monster preflop, player B holds rags. Player A improves on the flop, player B doesn't. Player B totally misplays the hands yet somehow catches runner, runner to win. Here are a couple of memorable examples from my experience:

1. (2/5 NLH ring game at Tropicana in AC): I hold AA, raise preflop to $20 get 1 caller (very loose, aggressive player). I have about $1200 in chips and he has close to $2000. Flop is A T 9 rainbow. I purposefully overbet the pot (something like $100). He raises all-in! I call. Turn is a 2 and river is a 5. He shows 3 4 and takes down the pot.

2. (Late stages of $100 buy-in tournament at party poker, 5th in chips). I hold AsQs on the button. Action is folded to me and I put a standard raise of 3xBB in. SB folds, BB (who is chip leader) calls. Flop is Js Ts 4s. BB checks and I bet about 1/3 the pot. He moves all in. I call. He turns over Ad9s. Turn is 7s, river 8s and I am out of the tournament.

If you play poker for any length of time you will experience both the anger and frustration of player A and the joy of player B. If you are a good player, you will be "player A" a lot more than "player B." It is inevitable. Since bad beats are part of being a poker player, it is critical that you mitigate their effect on your play through proper control of your emotions and proper management of your bankroll. If you get busted as a result of a bad beat, remember that you are simply one more member of a very large club.

As for me, unless someone slips a 5th ace into their hand to beat my royal flush, I am not going to get (too) upset over a bad beat. It happens; that's poker.

WOW, those are terrible. Those are two bad beats that belong on this board (take note, TerryK). I'll try keeping #1 in my head next time I lose $20 and get pissed...hopefully, I'll remember that the beat could have been much, much worse.
