Most people consider pockets TT and JJ to be some of the best poker hands as do I. However they tend to lose about 50% to 60% of the time. Or at least when any of the higher face cards come. As you're probably aware if you played online poker. 87% of the time a face card is going to come on the flop. Most of the time when that happens you ether folded it or you lose money with it and try to see what happens. Since most online player tend to see the flop with about 50% to 70% of their hold cards, and on a tight game around 25% to 40% it makes it pretty hard. But taking this fact out of the running since if you have a good read on a player you pretty much know when he has something and when he doesn’t. My question is what to do with pocket TT and JJ or 99 even, after/on the flop when there is a higher face card(s) on the flop. On early, middle and late position?

Most people can play small pockets and everybody knows (at least everybody should) know how to play good cards. But this 99, TTs and JJ are just at the top. But not quite there since they tend to get slap on the face when somebody hits a higher pair. For example: lets say you holding JJ the flop comes Qh6s3h, you have 58% of winning and are probably ahead. You bet, lets say they called. Ad comes, now you're 62% to win. However what you have to take in to account is that % is against two random opponents hands. what you have to ask yourself is, what did they call with pre-flop? Depending on the raise you probably made with your JJ pre-flop you pretty much know (should know). Now if you ask me if you made a standard raise with about four time the big blind you're probably beat. If you made a bigger raise you're most likely beat. Think of it this way. The bigger the raise you made the bigger the chances your beat. Since people will call with bigger and better hands if you make a bigger raise. Now if Nothing big comes on the board, by all means the pot is all yours. careful though ... as people may have higher pockets then you and then your in big trouble. I seen it happen and is has happened to me. I bet big since I want to take the put right there. And somebody just come over the top. And if you go by pot odds (as you should) I/they/you had to call. Since I had top pair (pockets) and the flop was not threatening. Since it had no straights, flushes, draws or high cards. Now what I was really afraid was two small pair. Since Online player tend to call bets with Pretty cards (cards that look good like suited non connectors, or connectors unsuited.) that realistically are not good. But then sometimes get lucky over you. I Seen it, I Know it; online player tend to call with pretty cards most of the time. Good cards don’t come as often no matter how lucky you think you are or you think they are. Good card don’t come as often. while is possible to get a good run of cards that is another story entirely.

Online player over value their hands way too much! I seen players call raises or even re-raises sometimes with; K5s, k8s,A8s,Q10os, J10s,KJo, 78s, etc… They think limping in wont hurt their stack “cause what’s the big blind” they say. Or they look at it this way. Since his betting with big cards and I have small cards my cards are free meaning I will have 2 life cards while the people who fold probably had his cards. Or if more people are in the pot and one raises and the other re-raises. (3 players seen the flop.) They think since 2 people are betting they probably have high cards so they limp in with small cards since they are going to have life cards. And if possible the two other opponent may have the same cards or at least one of each others cards. So they think their odds are way better then the 2 other player. So to them it don’t matter what cards they are calling a raise and re-raise with. “The worse the better” they say. And if they are small suited or suited connectors “Great!!”. while they may get lucky once and win a pot like that. I can tell you that they have to get lucky. In poker you want to go in with the best hand. That’s all you can do. The rest i

with hands like 10/10 and JJ, i like to make larger preflop raises than the typical 3x the bb. This way i can put my opponents on a smaller range of hands, and usually with such a large raise (i like 5-6 times BB) you will only get 1 caller or so.
Good players will not call these raises with A/rag or two paint cards (like KQ) in fear they are dominated, which are the types of hands you want to get rid of.
They will call with smaller pocket pairs though trying to hit a set, so this is a good thing as they are a huge underdog to you. Even if you stumble upon an AQ or AK you are unlikely to get reraised and are still a slight favorite.
I do feel that 10/10 and JJ are two very tough hands to play even when you have the control. Knowing your opponent definetely helps in this situation.
