I was playing cards today and this guy told me about a Bad Beat that apparently happened in Vegas a while back and there was a story written up about it. Anyway, I am looking for a link to the story and any help would be appreciated.

The story I was told went like this:

This older lady had been at a table for a while and this young punk was just verbally abusing her all day. Being a grade A a-hole. They get heads up in a pot and the kid has quad K's. Lady asks what the Bad Beat Jackpot is. She is told that it is around 50k, so she shows the little punk her quad aces and he mentions he will make a load off the Bad Beat Jackpot. She looks him dead in the eye and tells him she doesn't need the money and mucks the quad aces just to spite the kid. Kid goes nuts screaming and yelling.

Just curious if this is some sort of urban legend or if it happened.

Thanks in advance for any links to the story or clarifications to it.

It happened. Go to www.bluffmagazine.com, the article should be archived. It was also posted in the poker room at ESPN.com

Here's the archived link on ESPN, but if you're not an "Insider" then you won't be able to read it: http://proxy.espn.go.com/espn/poker/columns/story?columnist=bluff_magazine&id=2316427

I would think for sure that it's got to be in the Bluff Mag archive section somewhere, but I haven't had the time to go through the entire thing: http://www.bluffmagazine.com/magazine/index.asp

Good luck. I read it and was pretty wow'd by the story. I play at the casino in the article sometimes and would have loved to have seen it...

HA! I found it! ESPN cached it on one of their print story pages:

I have two questions....

1. If they were both all-in, as the story says, wouldn't both hands be flipped up and a winner be required?

2. Isn't there a rule that says if you fold, and your opponent asks to see your hand, your cards will be 'live' as a result? I suppose if she tossed her cards right in the muck, you couldn't do too much, but I think that's a violation of yet another rule, ya?

To make the story make more sense, (for me, until my questions are answered), they should have been betting back and forth after the turn was on the table, and that betting should have ended with Crew Cut finally going all-in. Then, at that time, had he declared he had the Aces full of Kings full house, and taunted her to give him a bad beat, it would have worked for her to show, not call his all-in, and fold/muck.

Reading closely, it mentions that Crew Cut goes all-in with the turn on the table. Then, it mentions that the river is the miss. Which means she called, and her hand should be face up. Ya?

Either I'm smoking crack again, missing some small detail, or...correct?

Unbelievable story, but one question. Isn't there some kind of rule that obligates the casino to pay out this badbeat jackpot since it was clear that it was AA vs KK (the hands were flipped over) and this hand qualified for the jackpot? I mean, i am sure the casino liked having it this way, but the players at the table who were guaranteed about 2K, and the a**hole who would have gotten half could put up a good complaint there.

edit.....i was constructing this response while se7en made his post, so sorry for the repetion as we both said kind of the same thing lol

I'm no live play expert, but I believe in cash games you are not required to turn your hand over until the river when someone is all in. The story says she turned her hand over, but it may have been just enough to flash crew cut and the table, and then throw them in the muck. I don't think you can pull cards out of the muck and let them play.

The above post is correct, a cash game is different from a tournament. In tournament play the hands are placed face-up when one of the players is all-in and no more betting is allowed. In a ring game hands do not have to be turned up until the river...you CAN turn them up sooner, but you don't have to. The old lady can show her cards then muck them, once her cards are in the muck they are not playable. Now if the dealer had seen her cards, pushed the stack towards her then she mucks her cards she is still declared the winner. But unless the dealer can clearly call her hand then if they are mucked they are dead.

Yup, Thanks.

I figured if it was in/on ESPN, it was legit, I was just curious to know how.

Ok maybe i'm being a pain here, but it says in the article:
"We were all dumbfounded, the players, the dealer, and the floormen......" If all of these people saw the hand, it would have to play. And, as one of those other players, if i saw the hand you can bet i'm getting my two grand, i don't care if an old lady wants to get back at him or not.
