|
|
| Does this happen to anyone else? I've won 3 MTTs since I've started playing online in February 2008. I'll win an MTT and go on awful losing streaks where nothing seems to be going right. Missing flops, losing to lesser pocket pairs. Less than a week ago, I won another MTT and I'm seeing the same situation taking place at sit n gos and cash games and other MTTs. I just can't get anything going. This has happened like clockwork since my first win. Is this a time when I should just take a long break from poker and enjoy the win? By the way, I haven't moved up in stakes after the wins, I usually just play what I want, and I can always afford it fairly easily. |

I think this is a psychological thing for you now. I have thought the same thing before myself but it is just in your head. Firstly, what are the size of these MTTs your playing? If they are large fields, you have to expect theres going to be fairly long periods of time that you wont win.
I would maybe consider sticking to one game after you have your win and see if anything changes. Of course, if you're getting beat up bad then it may be time to take a break. Maybe post some of your hands on the forum and get some feedback on how you played. Maybe you'll find out that alot of these suckouts your experiencing could be avoided. GL at the tables. |

Agreed with BeefStew.
I've had some similar thoughts and runs too. Part of it may be that you're so use to winning and succeeding, that a couple beats or losses can snowball into worse. Every beat, every loss not only is magnified, but makes you play differently, taking away from the play that got you to succeed in the first place.
There are good days and bad days, good weeks and bad weeks. I know recently I haven't been playing much, but had a run where I did well in some small MTT's (less than 30, almost all forum events) and SNG's. I then hit a run where I took some beats and didn't play well. Since I already wasn't playing a whole lot, I cut back even more and waited for those negative thoughts and negative plays be forgotten about.
I admit I am very guilty of complaining about these things and beats. But, after my last one in mid-July, I feel I have calmed down and finally am starting to realize what people say about beats and variance (Big thanks to Gonefshng, Rob, and Riddim for persisting despite my ignorance and lack of listening). Just take some time off, and come back with a fresh approach. |

Going on a long (> 15) winless/cashless streak in MTT's is very common.
Go to http://www.officialpokerrankings.com/ and check out the losing streaks of some of the the highest ranked players in the world. |

| Two of the MTTs have been 222 players and the other was 309. The first that I won was only 74 players (but listed in the Tournaments tab). Anyway, it's not only bad runs with MTTs, it's also sit n gos and cash games. I basically feel like a lot of it is psychological and I just need to get back in the swing of handling losses. Hopefully with every win, it'll get easier to get over a bad run which will probably be a short term thing. |

| I get losing streaks all the time. Sometimes it's just crap luck, and sometimes it's lack of focus. I know once I start getting pissed off, I start playing marginal hands more impulsively... that's usually a good time to lay off for a bit. I find if I can get into a run where I'm playing with confidence, then I see better results almost immediately. If you're mentally feeling shaky about your results or how you play, it'll probably affect you. |

I am experiencing a very similar thing these days.... Though not completely on teh tournaments side of it. I just posted a message in a similar context.
I posted it saying "does it get difficult when you are nearing iron man status"
I'm trying hard to attain that status and have been playing ..lets say not bad in cash.
But there is always a hand that comes after when I get healthy stack.
I usually buyin for min and create a steady tight player facade. In 2/4 I slowly move up from my $80 stacks to around 400 -500 and then THE hand comes up when I lose the whole in one single hand. Some one draws out on me ...and that someone is always a huge stack who calls either on my trips or my straight.
Moerover, for the last 2-3 days...I have not been hitting the flops at allllll and whenever I have pockets somebody else will either have higher pockets or if I have higher they outright flop trips and I have lost all the money I earned the whole month and now just bought back in for 600 again yesterday and am on the verge of sweeping it tooo...
I was wondering if the poker gods (FTP algorithms ) are designed in such a away that players are to be given a hard time when they are about to reach the status?
Should I step down to the lower tables?
Lost 7 buyins in a row yesterday and 4 of them were bad beats. 7 buyins --- each 80 ... my 600 evaporated. Please guide me into what I should be doing? |

I suggest you learn about Bankroll Management. You shouldnt be playing that high stakes if it is a BIG deal that you lose it all. The idea is to not have so much on the table at anyone time so if you do get beat, you still have a healthy roll to play with. Also, if you do win a few big hands and get a huge stack in a cash game and dont want to lose it, you can just leave and take back your minimum buy in again. |
