I just read your thread and I pray for your mother and your family. I know personally what cancer is and what it can do.

I somehow missed this thread until tonight. I'm glad to hear that the surgery went well, Cubbies, and I hope they tell you good news soon.

Cubbies, I wish you and your mom and family the best.

The first few days after a major surgery can be a wild rollercoaster of emotions.

I myself was really sick until last november when I was lucky enough to get a double lung transplant. I spent 8 days in the hospital, and I had good days and bad days. That week was pretty crazy, because of the combination of the stress, pain, drugs, and just being in a hospital makes it hard to rest when people are waking you up every few hours for tests, to check your blood pressure etc...

Modern medical science still blows me away. It's amazing what they can do.

Stay positive, get an idea in your mind about where you want to be in 2 weeks, a month, 3 months, next year....... keep it in your mind, and STAY POSITIVE. And make sure your mom thinks positively too!

Honestly, I think staying positive is the most important part. You already spent time worrying and stressing, the surgeon said it was perfect so take him at his word and stay positive from here on out and things will be much smoother then spending all your time worrying.

One other thing, if you get a nurse for a shift who isnt quite keeping up with your mom's needs, please find someone else to help, i dealt with many nurses that were wonderful and a few who were quite the opposite. The great ones will help you no matter what, so seek them out if you have a problem or question.

Best wishes cubbies

Super to hear the promising update cubbies! From what I've observed, in any type of recovery, a positive attitude is about 80% of the battle. I will keep her and your family in my prayers.

We've had some differences in the past, but that really makes no difference here in saying that I really know what you're going through and hope your mother gets through it well and you stay strong mentally during the entire thing. I know what you're going through as I lost my mother a couple years ago. I really really hope she gets through it. Good luck to you and your family.

Best wishes,

CD

Cubbies,

I haven't been on the forums lately so I just read this thread. I am terribly sorry to hear of your family's troubles. Best of wishes to you and your family. I hope that your mom's recovery progresses well and quickly.

Several other have posted this, but remember to ask questions of doctors and nurses. It really helps if you know what to expect and look for, especially in a longer recovery. Having an idea of where the doctor expect her to be in 3 months, can really help to cheer up your mom (and the rest of the family) when she has a bad day -- and trust me there are always bad days in the course of the recovery. To compare it to the game we love, knowing that you are doing things that are good in the long run can help overcome the variance of a bad beat. Also try to keep a positive attitude around her because that will help her stay positive.

Finally, I have a couple friends who are doctors, so I know that they often say things that sound weird to us who aren't. So, when the surgeon said it was "absolutely perfect" he probably meant that the surgery went that way. While it is a crappy word choice, it is good news because it means that nothing funky or unusual happened during the procedure and that he did not see anything when he was inside that worried him.

Keep your chin up and best wishes to you, your mom and the rest of your family.

Dave

UPDATE 9-11

My Mom's been home for a couple weeks, and she's getting around OK with a walker and crutches. There's still no definitive answer to if/where the cancer has spread, but most signs are leading to the opinion that at least it must not have spread rampantly or progressed beyond something that would probably be managable.

She's going to a highly specialized oncologist on Monday with the stack of test results, charts, etc. for hopefully some sort of final opinion regading the status of the cancer.

As far as the logistics of the femer/knee replacement, I guess it's going about as expected, and it also appears that my Mom's spirits are pretty normal. That is great news, IMO.

Last Sunday was my parents 40th anniversary, and my brother and I had a party planned even before the cancer diagnosis. It was last Saturday, less than a week after she had gotten out of the hospital. Even that she was basically confined to a lawn chair for most of the day/night, she had a great time visiting with all of the friends and family that came. It's funny how 101 out of 105 invitees showed up. I think that's indicative of human nature, as my Mom wondered if everyone except (2) couples made it a point to attend just because she was sick.

We are all resting a bit easier, but it would be great if we could just get someone to say that it's all clear.
