while this line can never be horrible, i think i kinda prefer just calling the flop

This. Unless there's some crazy dynamic where he'll be bluff 3-betting you or getting it in really light for value on this flop, you're just coming so close to turning your hand into a semibluff that never folds out better by taking this line.
