I was checking on my account at Party last night and got a offer to give me $25 on Party if I would spend $20 on a membership to the Poker Player Alliance.
I've checked their website, but the information is pretty vague...broad statements about protecting poker player's rights and keeping poker legal.
Does anyone know anything more about this group? A free $5 sounds like a nice deal, but I don't want to join any questionable organizations. |

Excellent point.
I might even be willing to do that IF I felt that the PPA was worth the $20 in the first place. I found a little bit about them on 2+2 where the consensus seemed to be "legitimate but ineffective, at least for now."
I admit that my check on their website wasn't complete, but I didn't find anything that looked like a real plan. Like specifying one or two states where they would try to overturn or replace bad laws, or maybe lobbying congress regarding online poker. As much as I would like my state to be an early adopter of legalized cardrooms (or online poker) I don't expect a national organization wants to target such a sparsely populated state (although I think an organized effort could have legal cardrooms in place by July 1 2008). But I do expect them to have one or more specific targets that they are going to focus on as proving grounds.
One of the authors in Cardplayer had been making a big deal about So. Carolina's law(s) in his articles. From his interpretation Monoply is forbidden (at least on sundays). If PPA wants to go after the law(s) in So. Carolina and get something sensible to replace them I'll kick in $20 to help--even if Party gives me nothing. (I'll take whatever anyone will give me as a bonus, but I won't join/donate soley based on the bonus.) |

| A buudy of mine tried it out. He Payed the $20, got 25 in cash back in his Party Poker account and also got a PPA T-shirt (black and pretty good looking) a tie clip and some other small things...so not a bad investment in my mind. |

Forgetting whether you get money out of it or not, it's a good thing to do.
I got e-mail from them today warning me about current legislation, and the e-mail included my senators phone numbers.
I made a call and registered my opinion.
Want to keep online poker legal? Take action.

Actually online poker is illegal in the United States, has been (we just all break the law). The laws are just not enforcable the way they are currently written. (that is why all of the poker sites are based outside of the United States).
The new law would have more of an effect, it would be illegal for a company to accept your money in any form.
What I would like to know does FT have a contingency plan if it occurs? Or are we in the states going to be SOL.
My guess is that it will pass, unless a great majority of players in the US contact their representatives - and even then with the conservatives in power we might not have a chance of stopping it.
(I'm a conservative on most issues, but not on restricting what a person does with their own money).
Does anyome from Full Tilt have an answer, please? |

It is only illegal to run a online poker room in the US, but not illegal to play as long as the legal gambling age in your local jurisdiction is at least the minimum age required by the online site (whichever is greater).
This is not the first time they tried to introduce legislation to put an end to online gaming, they tried to broaden the scope of the wire act or something like that where its illegal to place bets over the phone--then expand it to include internet as well. A very greasy and corrupt slimeball named Jack Abramoff that you are hearing about in the courts now was able to lobby and get rid of the proposal back in 2000 and did so sucessfully. Now that he is in court and unable to lobby for online poker, it is still not that big of a deal because the online gaming industry has boomed to a multi-billion dollar a year business and can hire high powered lobbyists by themselves. This is not a bad thing with the poker player alliance as long as they plan to lobby for online poker and if you get a bonus account and a shirt, my thoughts are YES, do it. |

I accepted the offer by Party Poker to do this and I think it is a good thing for a small amount of money that can protect our poker playing rights not just online but also live/home games as well. It costs like $15 to signup on your own and you get the mentioned gifts for joining.
Details about PPA that I think are correct.
It is backed by some solid pros
It is non-profit
They fight for you poker playing rights.
I think anyone who plays poker even for modest stakes would benefit by joining this association |

My two cents on Poker Player's Alliance.
Its a fraud. Totally. I saw it and got in the first offer they had for it. I had just cashed out of Party Poker a couple days before and was on vacation. I logged on and deposited to play at Party, and the invitation was in the Cashier on the screen that showed up after a deposit. I read thru it, adn they offerd a $100 7x bonus code if you signed up. I signed up, and tried to use the code and Party wouldnt give the bonus. THough there was no mention of it on the webpage, no email, nothing, if you had cashed out recently you couldnt do the PPA bonsu. They wouldnt refund my membership, and they promised a t shirt that never showed. Its just a scam to get funds into whatever lobbying efforts they had before. Trust me Party is looking after its interests, not yours. Lobbyists are never about consumers. |

| I got my tshirt and bonus, but the tshirt took at least 8 weeks to arrive. I'd completely forgotten about it by the time it arrived. No problem with the party bonus - perhaps you should have read through the agreement? It seems more like an error than a fraud. And honestly, it's only $20 - not really a huge deal, and certainly a good cause to be involved in. |

Ditto for me Jaconda, I got the bonus and about 7 weeks later I got a shirt. I still feel it was worth my $20 to hopefully keep my favourite pastime..
