|
|
Just wondering if it is a good idea or not. Lately I've had situations where I was ahead on the flop and on the turn only to get rivered by the other player who is not not allin and I would have had the allin beat.
In some situations I was ahead and the other player bets or pushes and then I get rivered.
Should I be protecting my hand or just accept the loss if the other player bets? What if there is a sidepot?
It's tough to swallow a loss when this happens that I check it down and have the other player bets and then they river me.
Thanks for any opion on this. |

| This is very situational. If you and another big stack call the all-in of another player and there is no side pot I would check it down. If you have the nutz then I would go ahead and bet. In Satellites you might bet early but play for the elimination close to the bubble. I also note players that bet into a dry side pot and always bet at them if I hit. |

| in tournaments, when we are close to the money I encourage both players to check it down regardless of the situation. if you are starting fresh then play it as you would a cash game |

This question comes up over and over again, and I think that's because, like everything in poker, it's so situational. Remember to base your decision on what you feel gives you the best chance to win the tournament.
In general (not always), if there's a side pot and I'm in position to take those chips, I will try.
If there is no side pot yet, it is sometimes correct to bet your hand, but almost never correct to bluff.
imo...fwiw |

| If you're out of position and have flopped a decent hand, bet. People are dirty, stinking heathens and will take control of the pot if you check. Never bluff a dry pot, though. |

| Sometimes what I like to do is raise big time after the all in to narrow the field, if I feel I have the winning hand. If there is a player with a stack that could cover me after my bet, it becomes a little trickier. It usually works where it would be just the two of us in the hand though. |

If I it the flop with a decent hand I bet out, usually just a feeler bet if he calls, then I still bet smallish on the turn.
For ex. a 200 bet into like a 1,000 pot will usually take it down. |

| I'll bet if I have top pair or better (not always, of course), but always check if I have less. If I have a good hand and am playing against a call station, I'll definitely bet. |

These situations are always interesting. The comical part is if a player is all in and i am in the hand with another player and bet, they will ALWAYS call me a donkey for betting. I just reply with a "heeeee hawwwww" and move on. The fact is more times than not you should be betting if a player is all in. I'll bet the flop with King high if i think it is ahead of the all in player. People forget that the goal in poker is to win money/accumulate chips. You accomplish this by getting the largest equity in a pot that you can, which always improves as you force other players out of the hand.
Cash games vs tournament play is definitely different. But in tournaments especially, i want to accumulate chips, not eliminate players (although the former usually leads to the latter to an extent). But as long as i'm getting chips, i don't care who they come from. I don't want to lose a pot that could have been mine merely because i wanted a higher chance of a short stack to get eliminated. The fact is, if he is a short stack, he's not much of a threat to me anyway. |

| If you have a made hand, go ahead and play it normal unless you're nearing the bubble. Then when you get yelled at you can tell them to shove it. =) |
