Playing "Big Chick" is about position, stack size, and timing of bets. I've won many pots with it.

Remember what Kenny Rogers said in "The Gambler": "Every hand's a winner, and every hand's a loser"

Tell that to the guy i lost a big pot too last night. 56suited against AQ. Flop comes rag, 5, 5 in a .5/1 PL ring game. pot was bet at buy AQ, i raise, he re-raises, i go all in, he calls (usually would think i'm beat but this guy was reckless, and i caught him). Turn: Q; River: Q. I lose my stack 5's over Queens to Queens over 5's. I'm taking some time off from poker, i can't take stuff like this anymore.

Obviously he didn't put you on a 5 and he got lucky. Keep playing with people like this and you will come out ahead over the course of many hands.

I know, but if I were to play right now I'd be so tilted and gunshy that I would just be wasting money. Luckily I have enough bankroll management so that this didn't put me on the rail, but it still hurt pretty bad and I need to take some time off. Still don't understand what he was thinking though and I hate when donks get payed off, especially with my money. Just venting.

You can do fine with it at the lower ring games (.25/.50) and lower SNGs and MTTs. At these limits you will win plenty against KQ and AJ-A/Rag.

I like to always remind myself that hands like AJ, KQ, AQ, and even AK aren't much better than 7/2 unless they connect with the flop. I go ahead and play them the way i should but if you have callers on the flop or especially the turn, and you haven't connected, these hands are worthless. A high card will not win the pot too often especially at the low limits. The biggest problem with hands like this is people overplay them and can't fold them because they have already put money into the pot.
Unless you get heads up with these hands, you can't constantly jam and expect to win. Besides most players are too dumb to fold bottom pair even if they think they are behind. Can't tell you how many times i lose with AK or AQ finding out that my opponent paired his 3 or something.

lol. Just ask Phil Ivey about AQ. Every time he plays them at a WPT final table he loses big with it.

AQ can be a winning hand, but you have to remember what mathman said, AQ, AK, KQ and hands like them are DRAWING hands. They will lose every single time to 22 if they do not hit the flop. I play them, but I play them cautiously.

I find AQ to be a fine starting hand in cash games but in tournaments where people seem much more likely to push in pre-flop with mid to low pocket pairs they can be a disaster. I see many times more people pushing in tournaments with 22-88 than anywhere in cash games and all of these hands are a favorite (albeit slight ones) to AQ. And rarely do I see people push with KQ, AJ, etc unless they are desperate so you're likely to be either a small underdog, or a very large underdog to QQ, KK, AA, or AK. I find in cash games that I treat AQ almost like AK, your equity is in getting others to fold pre-flop. I see a lot of people playing it weakly pre-flop because they are worried, then try to play it strongly post-flop because they simply do not want to fold it.

AQ can be a very dangerous hand.

I usually keep my AQ's on a short leash because when you're in trouble with AQ, you're in major trouble. Jamming AQ will get alot of folds when your ahead and alot of flat calls when you're drawing dead. Losing big and winning small. AQ Be Careful!
