I've been playing $5 9 man SNGs on pokerstars lately, my bankroll has been very stable, starting at $50 its been up to about $75 and down to $25 and up and down again... at about $50 again now, but no real upward trend.
I know 50 tournaments isn't really enough to get a good idea and discount variance but I figure I need to start somewhere. Out of 50 I've had 20 money finishes which I think is quite good. However the 20 money finishes break down to 3 1sts, 11 2nds and 6 3rds.
So I think my problem is pretty simple, I'm just not playing heads up good enough, or properly... or my luck is just bad. Generally my heads up play is just aggressive, I try to let it get to the 200/400 level (this is non-turbo btw) and then just raise a lot preflop with the right hands and pretty much hope I can get my money in with decent odds and win a race. I'm not sure if I should be trying to see more flops? I have a very hard time putting my opponents on hands on the flop because HU is so different than the rest of the SNG that you can't really transfer over betting patterns and such (I think?) So I just try to do most of the playing preflop. I'd post some hand histories but I feel like my HU play is just flawed and I need some general advice, not so much what to do in exact situations, but if you guys can use some specific examples it would definitely help. With getting to heads up 14 times and only 3 1sts I feel like its very weak... on the other hand I know the majority of the times I've lost its generally when our stacks are pretty even and I get into a race where its 60/40ish or 40/60ish and lose, so is it probably just variance? When the stacks are pretty even in heads up and blinds below 250/500 should I be trying to see more flops?

edit: Also, I nearly always play 2 tables at once. I find it detracts abit from my focus but playing only 1 I get far to bold and end up doing stupid things.

I think you should post the HH of a tourney you ended up 2nd in. Seeing what hands you're choosing to play or not could generate some pretty good discussion and advice that will probably help you a lot.
Just look at the stuff in the $6 SnG walkthrough a few threads down. |

I read the $6 walkthrough and pretty much everything the majority said was exactly what I'd do.
Alright, here's the history of my last HU, I was actually playing 2 HU matches at once since both my tables got to HU so I was even playing abit worse than my normal game probably. As well this was at like 4am and I feel like I was being abit more agressive than I normally would be after losing like 4 tournaments in a row on top of being pretty tired.

Here are my thoughts on various hands:
#2: Don't make such a weak reraise. Push all in. You will get calls from hands you dominate (KQ, AQ, etc.), and if the guy is just trying to push you around, you will get some respect.
#5: Don't minraise unless you have a read that your opponent is so weak that he will often fold a minraise. You don't have that read here. At least raise to 2.5xBB.
#7: Never never never complete like this. If you want to play a hand, raise it. Otherwise fold.
#19: Raising is pointless. Also, like I said earlier, don't minraise. Villain has less than 10M, so if you want to play a hand, just shove. This one I would fold, btw.
#21: Again, just shove.
#26: Don't complete. Raise this.
#27: Looks like you are getting tired/bored. Don't open shove this, just raise like normal.
#29: Don't complete. Raise or fold this (I'd probably fold).
#30: Bet this turn, something like 3/4 pot. You have a flush, and there is a reasonable chance the other guy has a pair and wants to see a showdown as cheaply as possible.
#31: Blinds are high enough that you can play around with raises, but it's a lot easier against most opponents, and often more profitable, to just go into push/fold mode.
#32: Check this down, don't bet. Certainly don't try to bluff him with a mini-3-bet. Call a small bet if you want, but what you did is horrible (no offense).
#33: Don't complete. Don't call his shove with QJ.
#34: You don't have enough to chips to fold this. Call! Lots of opponents are shoving ATC anyway, because you are so short.
#37: You have so few chips I might even shove this, too. |

| Thanks for the advice I agree with most of it, and you're right about #32, we were actually talking abit in chat which is why the hand kinda played out weird... I didn't really know what was happening and he of course showed me 84o. haha. |

My read on this guy would mostly be he doesn't call at all unless he has something, so my game plan is mostly if I hit something like top pair and there aren't too many overcards or a big draw I'll try to induce a bet, otherwise just pick up the pot.

| I'll comment on individual hands later, maybe, but you seem to be playing way too weak, in general. Especially against a player as weak as your opponent. This is the type of opponent you want to raise 2.5xBB against every single hand. You might even get away with minraising everything. He is just folding nonstop. There is no need to ever let him see a flop. |
