Recently, both live and online I've been losing huge pots to 2 outers. Here's the most recent:
$100 Bounty Tournament at a live charity event. 70 people entered. After about two hours there are 30 players left and I'm sitting around the middle of the pack with 14,600T & two bounties (Starting stack was at 7K). I was playing pretty well, in spite of flopping sucker hands in EP. Had hit two pair on a straight board and a set on a flush board. In both instances the players who took the pot from me showed the straight and the flush respectively. I thanked them for the information and patted myself on the back for getting away from the hands.
Anyway, at this point at UTG + 1 and the blinds at 600-1200 I find myself with Queens. I raise to 3000, hoping for one caller. The girl on the button raises all-in, and had me covered by 200 chips only. From her demeanor I could tell that she either had AK or a weak pair and was trying to push me out. I called and she showed 77. She turned a set and I was eliminated.
Now, I've played long enough to see this happen plenty of times, so I wasn't surprised by it. But it was just so frustrating this time because besides the fact that I was playing so well, it's been happening so often to me lately. Two hours of hard work down the tubes in an instant.
I expect the occasional bad runs, but when these bad-runs predominantly feature two-outers on important pots, it just rubs salt in the wounds. |

At least it was a bad beat for charity.
Also, because a post in this section of the forum just wouldn't be complete without it,
"OMG REAL LIFE CHARITY POKER IS RIGGED!" |

Happened again Friday in the same tournament.
Just before the first break, over an hour into it, I was doing pretty well and sitting with about 11,000T after starting with 7K. Find AA UTG, and raise it to 1500 with the blinds at 300-600. The guy to my left who has been LAG reraises to over 3K. Everyone folds to me and I go all in. After going into the tank, he calls (and had me covered by about 500T). I flip over my AA and he flips over TT, and he hits a third T on the turn, eliminating me.
I think I have to take a break for at least a month. I'm tired of trapping people in situations where I'm an overwhelming favorite and then watch them beat me by hitting a card that they only had a 4% chance of hitting. It's not fun. No matter how well I perform, I keep getting crippled or eliminated by these two outers or someone outdrawing me.
I'm just gonna leave the game for a while, take care of some things, most notably grad school, and come back to the game with a clear head and hopefully then I can deal with these bad beats when they come. |

the truth is nobody can answer the important question (why), and instead they suggest you 'improve your game' when in fact there was nothing worng with your game or the play, for you or me in my identical situations daily.
chris ferguson did write somewhere (and im not quoting word for word):
you are probably losing the hands the correct amount of times based on the amount of hands you are playing, basically, you are playing too tight and these ridiculous scenarios hit you more often because you are in too few hands.
whilst this does make some sense, im still not convinced that the winning hand should be losing more often than winning at crucial times in a game. (i would rather get sucked out at the start if its going to happen). especially when i see the same people playing in the last 10% of big games a lot, cashing, and probably playing the same way you (and i) did - thats what im green about. im not angry, im not jealous, just a LOT puzzled....
it does make you think 'what am i doing wrong'. we probably arent doing anything wrong, we are just more unucky then they are. can this really be the answer ? i doubt it......
my 5 cents........ |

That theory has been rattling around in my head. I have loosened up my game a bit in the last few months, but generally I still play a tight game. Maybe when I return to the game, I'll try an even looser game and see what happens. The problem is I'm not comfortable with that style, and am wary that if I play too many pots, by stack will dwindle. I usually try to play around 20% of my hands in MTTs to avoid that.
And Jackten, it doesn't bother me if no one cares. I just need to vent sometimes. I realize that high PPs are cracked every now and then. It's just that when it happens a lot in a relatively small amount of time, it gets frustrating. |
