|
| Hi! I'm a microroller mtt player (no limit hold em). I usually play the one dollar and 5 dollar tournies. I am quite sucessfull in these tournies making the money about 75 percent of the time. However, I am always a early casualty when in the money. I usually feel unfullfilled after making 2 or 3 dollars. So my question is does anyone have a good late tournament strategy after reaching to money. I'm always willing to improve and would love to here some feedback. Thanks! |

| Usually later in tourneys, after making the money you have to speed up your gm and steal more blinds and antes. In my opinion u have to gamble alot more so u can build a stack to win the tourney. |

| People usually become a lot looser the very second everyone gets in the money, but it only usually lasts 1 blind level, after that stealing smaller pots and blinds is easier. |

i agree with bronco... get your hands on this book ASAP! the entire book focuses on the late stages of a tourney (especially the final table), and it will help you out with your problems |

Well technically there are two things you COULD do....
If you are sitting with a decent chip stack, you could just sit out every hand unless AA, KK, or AK/QQ and then make huge bets either trying to steal blinds or win a big pot....this way you will only be getting blinded in and you will most likely finish higher, but not winning...
Or you could play a more open/aggressive game attempting to steal and push around the smaller stacks....
I prefer to try to WIN the tourney by becoming more aggressive, but playing very tight while in the money can drastically improve your payout, especially in MTTs... |

You need to get in the state of mind that cashing, but barely, does not equal 'successful'. Winning = Successful. |

It seems to me that often times, you're just barely squeaking into the money when you do make the money. One strategy that I like to employ is to be EXTREMELY aggressive on the bubble. It's far easier to amass a large chip stack at this time, because the rest of the table is playing so tight. The drawback to this strategy is, you won't make the money quite as often as you do now, but when you do make the money, you will have a lot more chips to operate with. |

Yeah, what he said.
Lindgren's WPT book is far from a definitive text, but he does a very good job of talking about how he, as a chip accumulator, sniffs out the people who play to survive. Once he's found them he attacks them mercilessly to build his own stack, taking advantage of their fear of going bust to collect enough chips to make a run at winning the tournament. If he goes bust early in the tournament instead of cashing, he's ok with that. He'd rather in 10 tournaments go bust early in 7 and make the final table with a shot of winning 3 times, than squeak meekly into the money in all 10.
Aggression and chip accumulation = Positive EV. Passive play and survival tactics as a general tournament strategy = The Kind Of Player That Good Players Eat For Lunch.
Be willing to lose your $1 or $5 entry for a shot at winning more than a couple bucks. If you want at solid hourly rate with some upside to tight, mathematic play, try limit HE ring games. There is greater reward there for this kind of play than in MTTs. Or play SNGs, where playing tight from the beginning, trying to win 3rd place, then getting aggressive only when down to 3 players, is the correct play. |

| At $5 tounaments, I don't play for the bubble. The best case scenerio is I make just a few cents and worst case I only lose $5.50. I have finished soooo many times within 5 positions of cashing, but it all got paid off on my first big tourney cash (2nd in a $10+1, 331 person tourney). Play aggresively and take chips away from the passive players that just want to make their money back. Eventually it will pay off. |
