I do not have it, but two of my friends do. They're going nuts over it, and IGN.com is calling it one of the greatest games ever.

I HAVE IT

I'm not using it with an HDTV, but the graphics are still pretty damn awesome. Gameplay is good, aside from the camera angles when you're driving which are going to take some getting used to. I havent played on it too much due to an exam tomorrow, but I'm sure I'll get a good few hours play in over the next few days. Not a major fan of the map either - it all seems a little dark and overcrowded, but as with the driving, I'll get used to it. It's certainly a much more manageable size than SanAn.

The H2H combat is grealtly improved, and you can have proper fights, disarm your opponent, then have them take the weapon back off you etc.

Haven't really explored any of the side missions, but I'm sure there are hundreds. Autosaves after every completed mission, so no more going back to safehouses.

That's all for now, will do a proper review when I've got a bit further into the game.

OK, I completed the storyline last week, so time for a proper review:

A brief plot summary: You are Niko Bellic, an eastern european war veteran who has arrived in America to live the dream. Fairly quickly you turn your attention to finding the man who betrayed your unit in the war, which resulted in most of your friends dying. You don't want to build or defend a criminal empire, run businesses or even break the law unless necessary, you just want to make ends meet, and get even. Purists may argue that this 'darker' storyline goes against the GTA ethos, but in truth it's much better, as there's less repetition when you need to do things like defend territory or collect protection money to keep your funds high. The vast expanses of GTA:San Andreas are also gone, and you can make it from corner to corner of the entire map in a little under 3 minutes in most cars. The map incidentally is set in Liberty city, but the layout of the islands is almost entirely new.

The graphics are much MUCH better. Most of the viewing angles are sorted out, which were at times awkward in previous versions. Everything is more detailed, and there is a wider variety of cars, including some nice supercars based on the Ferarri Enzo and Pagani Zonda. I've always considered myself a driving specialist rather than a sharpshooter in the GTA series, and GTA:IV is a new challenge. The handling is much tougher and more realistic. You can also get shot by your opponents through windows and windscreens, so road positioning and making the most of the geography can at times be harder. If you want a real challenge, use SIXAXIS control for choppers, bikes and boats. Shooting on the other hand is easier I think. There's very little that requires the use of free-aim, and the viewing angles in H2H combat are easier to work with.

The only downsides I can think of are that some of the missions are a bit samey. I often found myself driving to a location, killing around 10 combatants, then evading the police. Evading the police is both easier and harder in different ways. It's a lot harder to lose your wanted level now - you can't drive into a pay&spray if the cops have you in line of sight, and there are no stars lying around to reduce your wanted level by 1. You need to lose them, and escape the search perimiter (which widens the more cops you have on you) before they leave you alone. That said, moving around whilst being 'chased' is easier as they don't seem to come at you as hard.

Going to the gym and practicing your driving/cycling/flying skill are out, but you can do more activities with your friends/contacts. These include bowling, darts, 8ball, powerboating and more. The more you do with your friends, the more they provide for you - ranging from free cab rides to bodyguards.

Some of the side stuff is a little wacky, there's a ton of radioactive pigeons sitting around the city that need shooting, and I think the rampages are gone Sad. The cars to be 'obtained' list is pretty long and should keep you busy for a while.

The down sides:

1) You will lose your life. Of this I have no doubt.
2) The viewing angles when driving round corners are sometimes not great.
3) I haven't managed to fly any planes yet.

Overall, it's a truly awesome game, and well worth buying. I have to admit I was a little surprised by the almost climactic nature and repeated twists of the storyline, which is the best yet I think. I'm a little disappointed that none of the characters from previous GTA's made an appearance, as that would have been good for effect I think.

In Australia the government had it on the prohibited list. Don't know if it still is or whether it's been 'nannyed' down to protect the bubblewrap hanging over Australian computers.
When at the same time the government owned SBS TV network has movies supporting all types of illicit behaviour including child sex, I believe that this is hypocritical.
