The Tropicana October 2007:
Two words to describe the current state: A Dump.
This had been my casino of choice. I like the restaurants, I like the rooms. I like poker room. Oh how times and a change of ownership can color that enjoyment.
The employees were surly, because, we were told that new management has laid off 900 people and nobody knows if they will have a job when they get to work.
The grounds- The casino is quite large and spread over two floors, Games abound and run from $5-$15 limits during the day to $15-$50 limits at night (with high roller tables available). The casino looks unkempt as do the hotel common areas. By the elevator on our floor was a recessed radiator. There was garbage sitting in it all weekend and nobody came to clean it up.
The eats- No prblems here. The Palm, Carmines (a NYC family style italian), Cuba Libre, Red Square, Hooters, Corky's ribs, amongst others.
The worst meal we had was the hotels buffet breakfast. It was dull and tasteless, and very pricey.
Dinner at Carmine's was outstanding. Carmine's salad is a must. After that you are on your own. Just know that on the weekends they only take reservations for 6 or more after 5 p.m. Otherwise you have to hope to get lucky, and you usually will...after 11 p.m.
Lunch today was at RiRa's irish Pub and I must say this was by far one of the best meanls I've had in a long time. The food is fresh, tasty, and perfectly prepared. It is pub style food, but traditional Irish fare is available. If you head to the trop, check this place out.
Why we are here...The poker room- What a disappointment. The room used to be brimming with players. They always had two FL$7.50-15 limit games running. They had $3-6 O8. This weekend they were running
1) Multiple 1-2NL and 2-5NL tables.
2) One stud $3-6
3) a few stud $5-10
4) on $3-6O8 table that ran short all day.
5) Multiple $2-4 FLHE
6) 2 $4-8 FLHE tables.
It was impossible to find a game that peaked my interest.
As for tournaments, they used to have a day time tourney and a night time tourney. This weekend they ran a night time $100 buy in freeze out limited to $100 players.
Game selection and tournament choices are terrible.
I think I will be checking out the Taj or Borgata my next time down. Truly a disappointing experience at my favorite AC getaway. |

I can't tell you much about the poker because I dont play enough of it live. However, I visit Atlantic City 5 or 6 times a year.
My favorite hotels and casinos are ... The Borgata, hands down the nicest casino in AC and on the east coast. It can get very crowded, and the non-poker games (craps, Bj, etc) carry high minimums on the weekends .. $15 and $25 are the minimum craps games, $25+ for Blackjack. Amazing waitresses, they even have their own calendar Unbelieveable pool and spa area. I know it's tacky but its very nice.
The Showboat is an underrated casino, although everyone in there is about 400 years old and every one of them is in my way! Nice rooms and at the end of the boardwalk, so not as crowded as the middle. In the summer they have a beach area right in front of them, not bad. Not a fan of the House of Blues restaurant, but I did enjoy their buffet upstairs. I did play a $50 + 15 tournament here, they have them daily.
Caesars ... my comped room was a dump. But the Pier is great, hopefully it'll last in AC. Game On is a fun sports bar on the third floor, replicates the Fenway Park restaurant of the same name. Caesars is connected to Bally's and Claridge (now all Bally's) inside, so it's nice in the winter.
Tropicana ... I never win here, enough said
Harrahs - across from The Borgata, it's okay. I've never had luck but the food is pretty good in all of the restaurants. I know they are updating their new pool area, try to compete with The Borgata.
Trumps casinos are like Trump, old and dated
Good luck!

| I live in Philly about an hr from AC and play there a good bit. Borgata is by far the biggest and nicest. Their daily tournys have a quick structure except for the Fri. $250+30 and Sat 350+30. I like harrahs daily tournys. They have smallish buyins 60+15 but no antes and 20 min levels. very nice people running the poker room also. No reporting to the IRS on tourny winnings either. |

| Quick question (may/may not be a stupid one). Ive only played online and at local home games. In a big MTT at a casino, how does the seating work? If a couple of buddies and I all register at the same time, they wouldnt seat us right next to each other would they? Of course if they did, I would play straight up, but if it could be avoided then avoid it we shall. Thanks for your help. |

Seating is assigned at random by computer program.
So most likely you won't be seated with your buddies. |

The Borgata-This is currently the jewel of Atlantic City (but some new casino's are coming that could change things.) The Borgata is currently building a second tower for more accomodations.
The rooms are beautiful, though I only spent 4 hours tops from 3:30 to 7:30 in it. The shower is amazing. It's a room in and of itself.
Food-plenty and good. Had dinner at Bobby Flay's. Out of this world. The reservations were made during the week and we sat right on time.
The casino-wide open so you never feel crowded. It is a casino for high rollers. You will not find $5 tables in the casino.
The Poker room-The room is spacious, the tables are large so you are never cramped. The game selection is vast and varied. They were running limit games from $2-4 to $300-600. They were running Stud8/Oh8 games. Robert varkonyi was playing in the room a few tables from me while his wife competed in the winter open women's event (She finished 4th). My only complaint is there was no readily available fixed middle limit game. I would have like 5-10; 6-12 but couldn't get it. For the games I wanted, you could wait an hour for seating.
As for tournaments, these guys know how to run one. I highly recommend tournament play here.
The Showboat-we ventured there Monday Morning for there $53+12 NL tourney. The room is tiny. When we got there they had two table up and running. We got in line to register for the tourney and it sold out, but they do take alternates. Not wanting to get on a waiting least we went over to ...
Trumps Taj Mahal. This is a great poker room. It is tight, but active. Played a tourney which wasn't very well run, but then played cash. Got into a $5-10 O8 with a kill. This is a great game. Played a little $1-2NL, but gave up the seat when my O8 game opened. If you want to be on the boardwalk, check out the Taj. |

| I am planning on hitting up AC the first weekend in April. Sounds like Borgata is pretty much the all-around best place to go? I will be sure to write a review when I return. |

Well, I guess I should go ahead and write my review. I ended up going the last weekend in March. I played mostly at the Borgata and spent a little bit of time at the Harrahs too.
The Borgata is a super nice casino and has a pretty big poker room, with a big selection of games to choose from. To be honest, I thought it was rather confusing trying to figure out what tables were for what and where to go when I was up to play (they fly through the names on the waiting list and if you don't find your seat quickly they will skip you). Another beef I had with them was after sitting at the same table for at least 2-3 hours, the last dealer that came to my table apparently felt it was necessary to I.D. me, which I thought was rather stupid, since the floor man checks it before you take your seat, and he unneccesarily held up the game. On a better note, the cocktail waitresses at the Borgata are all smokin hot and wear next to nothing, it is great
On Sunday I played for an hour or two before going broke at the Harrahs. The poker room is a lot smaller, but I enjoyed playing there more because of the quieter and less confusing environment. Also the dealers are much friendlier and much more pleasurable to be around than at the Borgata. I think I enjoyed the table company more here too.
So in an overall comparison, the I think the Borgata is a better and nicer all-around casino, and the girls are much better looking there too. But if you are basing it strictly on poker, I personally preferred the Harrahs.
And anyone that thinks that online is the only place that dishes out bad beats is wrong. My 3 hands that I lost most of my money with were with AA, KK and KK |
