I've been playing online for about 4/5 months now, and I've had my up's and downs...I've been way up, and way down...but in the end it always ends up being down...lol. I've tried everything...I've read books...watched videos, studied how other people play...it's all a joke. The books I've read make it sound like you should have AA or KK once every 5 hands and you should fold everything else. I've come to the realization that online poker has very little to do with stradegy and much more so to do with the luck of getting strong hands and more importantly favorable flops. The majority of the time the reason I lose is because of bad beats and unfavorable flops on strong hands. I honestly have tried many different playing stradgies...I usually play tight...but I've tried playing loose...and I've tried playing a mix of tight and loose so people don't get a read of me, I've played my cards the way I was supposed to according to my position on the table, but in the end the guy who has the best hand always wins...no matter what kind of checking, betting, and bluffing is going on. I know I'm not alone here cause I see the same thing happen to most everyone else I watch play, most people always lose in the end...lol.

It seems like I have the most luck at sit & gos, I usually at least get to the final table...bad beats don't seem to happen there nearly as badly as they do in the cash games. But still it happens...just last night I had AA and got beat by Q10 off suit...he called my raise on the pre-flop (it was a pretty stiff raise) and he floped the nutt straight...J,9,K. I went all in after the flop...he calls and wins. I know everyone says that rarely happens...but I beg to differ, online I see it happen all the time.

I want to ask this...does anyone have any "conspiracy" stradegies I may look into? Do you have certain seat you sit at...or a certain time you play...or maybe a certain table that seems to pay you out the best? If you play in tournaments and sit & gos do you ever feel it will get you more favorable cards in the cash games (because of paying full tilt the fees for playing in these tournaments.) I've thought about things like this, and was wondering if anyone else has...and if so acted on them?

Can you tell when you sit down at a table whether or not you are going to win? I can usually tell after the first 10 hands what kind of night it's going to be for me. I usually set a goal of how much I want to make and when I reach that I will get out...I do the same on the losing end also. I tell myself if I lose X amount of dollars at this table I will leave (usually amounts of half of what I sit down with.) Is this the right or wrong thing to do? 99% of the time if I lose half the money I sit down with I'm gonna lose it all if I stay at that table. Anyone else feel this way?

I go on runs where it seems like I can't lose...and I go on runs where it seems like no matter what I will not win. I swear it is NEVER anywhere inbetween. I have a feeling this is how it is with everyone...how do you truely overcome this? I would like to be able to capatalize on the winning times and mimimize the losing times. How is this done? If you win big for a couple of days should you stay away for a couple of months? Or if you lose big for a couple of days should you stay away for a couple of months?

Any advice on what I've asked would be great. Please spare me the playing stradgey advice...thanks but no thanks. I've read up and studied on so much playing stradgey I'm sick of it...I'm a true believer in playing stradgey in real face to face poker games...but online I think its more so about luck...or some other kind of stradgey I haven't figured out yet, such as the stuff I've mentioned above or maybe other things I haven't yet thought of.

I like to sit at the bottom center seat...

I'm pretty sure it's the same virtual deck.

There is no such thing as luck. In the end, the losers lose and the winners win.

I play a lot of SnGs., with the standard Sngs you can and should sit tight until the right hands in the right position come along but in TURBO SnGs it normally comes down to winning a race or 2 as to weather i do well or not.

Some days my AK suit will beat a push from a 33 other days my 99 will beat an AJ but then i have days in turbos when i dont win ANY races and lose lose lose.

I love turbos as there quick and can be very profitable but i win more money long term in the regular Sngs.

Darren.

You read all those books and still lose? I developed my own game without books and found my own way to win at online cash tables. I've just recently started reading my first book on Texas Hold'em.

To relaxedriley who wins more playing naked.

Are you sure you are winning more? Or is everyone else just losing by you being naked?

Is this strategy primarily for online or live play? Smile

and on a side note do you ever feel bad for the next guy that sits in your seat or for the seat itself for that matter?

It's all starting to make sense now.

Whenever you go allin, nobody dares to call for fear of you standing up to leave, or worse yet, pace around.

I've been playing for about a week and an half. Mainly 1$ and 2$ sit'n'go single table.

I lose money about 50% of the time.

What works for me : play 2 tables at once, 1$ turbo + 2$ regular usually, and doing something else in the mean time (watching TV, reading,...)

I usually almost don't play before at least a few players are gone 3 or 4 usually.
I did not read any poker book yet. Might read one soon cause I like reading. I do still learn alot, about how people are supposed to play according to books and stuff.

When there are still alot of players, I think I play tight (counting what can beat me). If there aren't much player and I have enough chip I play hard. You have to pay to see the cards.

Most important, I try to keep having fun.

If I can afford it, I play stupid from time to time, like call with 2 7 unsorted and stuff like that.

As long as my balance is in + I don't worry much.

To the OP:

Better at analyzing flop textures and improving at hand reading comes to mind as something your game might be missing.

I'll keep this response as simple as I can but...

What it really comes down to is discipline. BR discipline and discpline with the hands you play. Sure, you see the pros playing crazy cards but more often than not, they're playing pretty deep-stacked not to mention they're pros.

Play strong starting hands and if you're playing lower stakes don't try to get cute. Keep it simple.

If you're raising up a hand like QQ and you have a couple of callers when the flop comes down with an A and/or K, you've got to be able to get away from the hand.

If you've been playing tight you may be able to get away with a bluff, but make it a semi-bluff or shove when you have a ton of outs and fold equity in someone.

There are plenty of plays to be made and tactics to use but until you're a more proficient player I'd avoid too much of it. Read books, articles, forums, but most of all you have to play, play, play.

Good luck.

I feel the same way about my play. It seems I'm on a constant rotation of win 60 bucks...lose 80. It just seems to go in these aweful swings where the downturn always wins.

Lately I've been on a pretty good negative spiral. However, I do believe you can pull through these if you discipline yourself.

I still think I play too tight too often...but when I make that realization at the table, my looseness gets called, and boom, I'm out a huge pot. Its like salt in a wound sometimes. It just doesn't end.

It does. It's just not as easy as people would like. Winning players put a lot into winning and understand that variance is variance. They stay disciplined. They still make mistakes but not as many as their opponents. Keep practicing, you'll get better if you truly care to.
