Everytime i play in the horse tourneys ohm hi/low kills me. The problem is that i dont what hands are truley worth playin pre, worth raisin, worth callin a raise, ect. What are some solid type of card hands to start off with here.

I know the obvious, that you want to be able to hit a mixture of high and low hands, but i dont know the type of range of cards i should be playing with. On the flop and turn i can figure from there, but my pre-flop playing is what really kills me here. The problem with horse is that if you dont know all 5 games well enough to be decent/good in comparison to the field it takes alot of luck to survive/win.

I'm curious to hear what others have to say about his. O8 is definitely my worst game. The problem is I'm not sure if it can be boiled down to starting hands the way hold 'em can. I know there is a hand ranking system that Zophar posted one time. Perhaps he'll post it here again.

I think I will go ahead and post a link to that system again in this thread. Thanks Robert. Now one thing about that system that isn't really discussed there is it's application in short handed and HU play.

Shorthanded you can be quite a bit more liberal with starting hands and the lower ranked hands obviously become much stronger. Really any rateable hand becomes pretty much playable.

HU you can pretty much play anything, except for I'd say complete garbage(PLO8 you can even add complete garbage). The mid connectors become MUCH stronger, as do high only hands.

In HU or really shorthanded play the key is to play a hand that you can win both sides of the pot or high only. Hands like KQ34 with maybe suited combinations HU are really strong, but of course in a multi way pot they are almost worthless unless you get lucky as hell. Once the flop is out the big key is to lock up one side or at least know you have the best hand and freeroll to the other side. Major no no in that game is to draw to only win half the pot at best. Omaha H/L is the absolute awesomest, stupidest, piece of crap good game in the freaking poker world.

I got a sort of love-hate relationship with Omaha H/L.

If I were starting out in this game again, I think I would stick to playing only hands that give me a good shot at a nut high, or nut low. Skip through the low paired hands, or any midrange hands, and play the cards that might just give you the nuts.

examples might be AsKs2c3d , any High paired cards with 2 low cards such as KK23, or AA34. Obviously any of the hands that give you good opportunities to hit straights (A234, AKJQ, JQKT) are worth checking out, and getting out if you don't hit a good draw or the nuts. But if you're unsure of playing this game, I would stay with the hands that could help you make nuts of the hi or lo.

This could mean folding through endless hands, but it's worth the time just watching other people lose their money, and learning what not to do through them.

And cardsharkcandi hit it right on, drawing in an effort to win only half the pot can break you. Especially in a tournament. Although the people holding the nuts won't complain that you've decided to tag along.
