I thought poker always used the hand ranking system (e.g. pair, trips, straight, flush, fullhouse etc), but razz doesn't.

So is razz definitely a form of POKER, or is it just a form of STUD?

I do like razz, but I'm just wanting some opinions.

Of course razz uses the normal poker ranking system. I think you are misunderstanding the rules to think that Razz doesn't rankings. It's just that Razz (like Omaha hi/lo and stud hi/lo) doesn't count straights and flushes against the hand.

Of course, now that I think of it, I bet 2-7 Razz would be quite fun.

Razz is a variation of 7 card stud poker, as is :

Baseball
Midnight Baseball
No-peek Baseball
High Chicago
Low Chicago
Stud H/L
Follow the Queen
Low hole
Low hole roll your own
etc...

and the list goes on.

Most of these games are usually only played in home games, due to the fact they involve wild cards.

Pair, 2-pair, trips, full house, str8, flush, quads, str8 flush, and even 5 of a kind are all poker hands but they are not all involved in every poker game, so I dont think it makes a game without all the hands any less a form of poker than the next. As always just my opinion.

Razz falls under the stud category for the way it's dealt, but follows lowball rules. Stud and lowball are both forms of poker, so obviously Razz is as well.

So what exactly is poker then? Razz might be considered just another card game, similar to stud, but lowball, but does that define it as "poker"?

If razz is a form of stud and stud is a form of poker, then wouldnt razz be a form of poker?

Stud is a form of poker, razz is a form of stud. That doesn't mean razz is a form of poker. Its like saying poker is a form of stud? lol

Webster's definition for poker:

n. Any of various card games played by two or more players who bet on the value of their hands.

stud is simply how the cards are dealt, one or two face down first then a series of one card, many times the last card is also face down. (depending on 5 card or 7 card stud)

So I guess it would be both, it is a form of poker, more specifically stud poker.

That's the worst use of misguided logic I've seen in a very long time.

Razz is a form of stud - stud is a variant of poker.

If you like:

Razz << stud << poker where << means is contained within.

Razz is a smaller group than stud because it is only one type of stud.
Stud is a smaller group than poker because stud is only one variant of poker.

Notice the way the arrows go - you could never say it means poker is a form of stud because the implication is going the wrong way.

Or - do you think that poker means hold'em?

Doesn't matter because either way I will be taking your money at the tables.. Twisted Evil
And tilt it off to someone else.
Wink

I agree that stud is a form of poker and razz is a form of stud making razz a form of poker as well.
