If your finished hand has only 4 or fewer types of cards at showdown, are you not able to win the pot? If no one has five different cards at showdown, what happens???

Thanks! Alan Chiras. Question

I have no idea what the heck you're talking about when you say card types unless you're referring to having pairs. But yes, you can win with a pair as long as you have the lowest pair or your pair matches his pair and you kicker is lower.

But what if my hand was 2-2-3-3-4-4-5? I only have 2-3-4-5. Not enough different cards to have five different cards for a st8. Can I not win?

Thanks! Alan Chiras.

Your hand would play as 2-2-5-4-3.

You would beat any hand of 2-2-6-3-A or worse.

You would lose to any hand of 2-2-5-4-A or better, which would include hands like A-A-A-A-K-Q-J (which plays as A-A-K-Q-J) or K-K-K-Q-J-T-9 (which plays as K-Q-J-T-9).

If you fold every Razz hand where you can't possibly show down a non-paired hand by the end -- that would be every hand where you have quads, a full house, or three pair -- you would not be giving up much value.

The main exception would be if your opponent's board looks even worse than your hand, but that comes down to a fundamental Razz tactic which you need to pick up as the main step beyond beginner play -- figuring out when to play your opponent's board rather than your own cards. Example:

You hold: (2-3)-3-3-2

Opponent holds: (x-x)-Q-Q-K

Your hand is horrible, and your opponent is probably better than a 90% favorite over you, but his hand is virtually unplayable, so betting into him would nearly always be mandatory.

A beginning razz player myself as of late, I can only suggest to those who aren't very familiar with the fundamentals to just remember some very simple things.

Razz is everything stud or hold 'em or omaha, except upside down. Where quads are great in those games, they're horrible in razz. Straights and flushes don't count. You want the lowest collection of non matching garbage possible.

You get seven cards. Ranking of hands at showdowns start with the (read this carefully) highest of your lowest five cards, assuming no pairs, trips, etc..

For example:

If you have A-2-3-4-5-6-7, you're best five card hand is 5-4-3-2-A. Yes, start with the five. It's the highest card in your five card hand and it is the first to determine if your hand is better than your opponent's/s'.

If you have 6-5-3-2-A and your opponent has 6-4-3-2-A, your opponent's hand is better.

If you have 8-4-3-2-A and your opponent has 7-6-5-4-3, your opponent's hand is best with a 7 low against your 8 low.

Hope I cleared things up instead of confusing you further.
