I was told that 7-8-9 is a terrible starting hand in Stud H/L. I disagree, but would like to hear some opinions on it. Also, as played, have I done anything: Horribly wrong, wrong but not horrible, ok, or I should have played it the way I did. Knighty from FTF kept bashing me over playing this hand, and I'm not sure why, so that's why I'm asking for some advice here. Thank you.

789 is not a good starting hand in s8. You most likely won't win the low, and your high might not win either. Knightly shouldn't have dwelled on that hand, though. Seriously, like 10 mins after he was still yammering on about it.

I guess if I was to make any comment, I'd just say, I wouldn't play that hand but that's just me. Knightly is an A-hole and has been from the get go.

Thanks for the assurances BNS and buns about Knightly. Is 789 a decent starting hand in Stud Hi? For some reason, I thought 3 connecting cards weren't a horrible hand to try. Again, no expert in Stud strategies, but just wondering. By the way, here is the entire HH.

problem with 789 is that it tends to rely on cards people use for higher straights, or to get their lows. So there's a decent chance you'll be facing a higher straight or higher straight draw, and as BNS mentioned, 87xxx usually isn't going to win a lo. 3 suited is a different matter of course, but those mid cards are terrible in a game where you want either hi or lo cards.

789 horrible in stud8, not that great in stud hi. Although in stud hi, it all depends on what everyone else is playing.
