|
|
Hello,
I just played my first Stud hi/lo tourney (the WSOP freeroll). I read a bunch of the posts here and Sklansky's hi/lo split section in SuperSystem to try to get a feel for the game and it seems pretty cool. I busted 92 or 2 off the money which sucked, but I think I played pretty well. However, if one of the more experienced players could tell me from the limited stats from the tourney if I was playing too many hands or folding in places that I shouldn't, it would be much appreciated.
total hands = 201 (won 9)
4th street = 48 (won 2)
5th street = 37 (won 3)
6th street = 28 (won 0)
7th street = 25 (won 1)
showdown = 23 (scooped 10, split 8, lost 5)
Thanks for any help.

| In a cash game I think those stats would be pretty good. In tournaments I like to lean on the tighter side, especially in games where there are so many players that don't know what the hell they're doing. Just avoiding the back back door low draw turned into three running cards for a flush and the scoop in those tournaments is a minor miracle. |

Sorry if this sounds like a complete newbie question, but I am one for this game. What about the 23 showdowns with 5 hands where I got scooped. In general, is that just dumb play on my part or will that happen in stud hi/lo?
I remember reading that the goal in hi/lo is the scoop, so I thought the 5 scoops against me was a really bad sign, although it might be outweighed by the 10 for me (even against what I have to believe was pretty weak competition).
Thanks again.

| I like to consolidate the showdown stats into just win / loss. I read that you have to take your splits and divide by 3-4 depending on how many opponents were in the hand to find out how measures up to a scoop. So those stats to me look like 12 out of 17 at showdown. For a limit game that's very good. In NL obviously you want a higher win at showdown since pots at showdown are often larger when compared to blinds. |

A word that is better late than never......lol.
I think using your stats as a basis for your level of profiency is dangerous.
Without knowing how many others at the table stayed in on each round of betting. Without knowing at what level of the tourney you had your ups and where you had your downs.
Not to mention what the chip tally on each hand amounted to.
I have played tourneys where I made 40,000 chips in one scoop and led the entire field from the start until the final two tables only to find myself chip poor and out of contention in four hands of horrible luck and maybe a bit of tired as well.....haha.......lol. My stats looked freaking amazing but in the end.......I failed.
Remember......like you could forget.......the bottom line is how many chips you have in your poke. Tourney or real life........The biggest pile of chips takes the day and while it's true there are prizes for just ending up near the final table in a lot of tourneys.........it isn't prizes for being the winner........only for outlasting the field.
What's that worth in the final breakdown.........Your guess is as good as mine or Joe Fergusons.........Trial and error is the best tool available to any of us.
A hundred experts can't give you enough advice or crunch enough numbers to make you a tourney winner, regardless of how constructive that might sound to you.
Take the time and invest the sweat and patience to acquire your own experience. It's all a matter of perspective..........and clear focus on your goal.
You gotta lose a lot to learn how to win a little. Imagine what is demanded of a player who wins a lot........yeah.........omg.
Just my personal opinion after reading too many threads like this one. I think too many prospective winners are trying to stat their way to the top instead of putting in their dues at the tables.
Yes..........I know. Like arseholes.........we all have an opinion.
Good luck my friend and my sincere wishes for your success...
Respects.........Winter.. 8) |

I understand that a total win rate of 12% at a ten man table (or equivalent at others) and a 75-80% showdown rate is where u should be.
Overall.
With hi lo, one could add factors such as scoops, but I dont know numbers on that.
Anyone have the numbers? Mike Caro out there?

I don't think this will ever get an answer that is usable by all of us. Just the way life and cards are sometimes.
You don't manipulate them as much as they manipulate you........lol.
Get a handful of hands like this one in my signature below......and stats be damned. You can go home with chips in your jammie pockets....hehe.
What was vexing for me is that the four clubs were showing of course and all the players kept betting and raising like I was not a threat to their pot.........I took hi and low of course.......and a truck load of chips.
Sometimes I fear for the stupidness of my fellow global villagers......glum..

Hi Manilla Dog,
Is that a statement about a relative of yours or a question about mine?
Do you have any sisters working in Olongqpo or Subic bay? If so, I probably met her and she was not named Quiet either. She was more of a Screamer, if you know what I mean...........and I know that you do?
HaHa..........lol.
Drink a San Miguel dark for me, my brother........no need to be quiet doing it though...........let it out. Make some noise, stomp your feet and kiss some girls for me....
Just remember, never run in downtown Olongapo at night. Last thing you will ever do..........am I right or what, Manilla Dog?
As a retired member of a P3 Orion aircrew based out of Clark airforce base and assigned to electronic surveliance (spying on the commies) and sub screens for the seventh fleet............I can say for sure........me and the fleet miss our liberty calls in your beautiful country.
I hope your home is now all your government hoped it would be when they decided not to renew the U.S. military base leases and somehow come up with the millions upon millions of dollars a year that used to get from us. Probably matched the amount taken in annually by the PI in sales and income taxes..........eh?
I hope your english is good enough to read this Manilla Dog. I would hate to think you told people to be quiet merely because it was too much work to read their posts in english.
I'm sure that is not it though.............who would even care..........right?
May you find what you seek and truly love what you find.
Respects.........Winter Lion... |

You might be right about that, but they are just actresses who put on a show for just the one audience member........eh?
They would have been cheap at twice the price, even if they didn't scream........WORD.
