Of course, chapters in books have been written on this subject.

But as a beginner, if you stick to these starting hands and fold all others, you'll be off to a good start:

1. Premium pairs (TT or higher).
2. Trips (of course).
3. Three-card flushes containing at least one face card or ace.
4. Three-card straight containing at least one face card or ace.
5. Small wired pair (99 or lower) with highest door card on board -- if your pair is completely live.

As a beginner, if you're not bringing in, then you should fold any hand that does not meet one of those criteria.

You can start getting a little more creative, though, as you get some experience and start learning the game.

You watched Rounders, right? You're looking for nines or better wired or Jacks or better split... and the straight and flush rules the other guy posted. And with the straights, you really have to watch the board - if you see a couple cards you need to that straight fold, you need to be folding too. No sense in chasing a two outer to 7th street, even if you do make four cards to the straight. In stud, A high is worth infinitely more than a four card straight, because you'll never lose four bets on A high... unless you're brain damaged.

Great advice here, and just what I was looking for, too, thanks to all who posted so far.

I've not read any books on the subject, but one other thing I do is I look carefully at my straight and flush draw hands and the board. If I'm holding Q,J,10, I'm looking at the board for how many 9's and K's are out there, and how many aces and 8's, too, since I might need them for my straight. If there are too many of the cards I need already in someone else's hands, I fold. Same thing with a flush hand. If I have 3 spades, I'm counting as many spades as I can (gotta be quick online sometimes, people fold awfully fast) to see how many are left for me to potentially draw. If there are too many on the board, I probably won't play the hand if I think it's the only way I could win with it.

do you have the original super system? if so, read chip reese's section on 7 card stud... it is the most useful poker literature i have ever read, and i swear by it... if you read it, you will understand concepts you probably have never even thought about...

Read Roy Wests's 52 Lessons in Stud, and also Zee's 7CS4AP. Unlike Holdem, there's a lot more complexity to starting hands in Stud, and you have to adjust these vigorously depending on the game, ante structure.

You might want to read this article. http://www.holdem.livewinner.com/introstud.htm It will get you up to speed quickly. After you play a few months Super System will be much easier to digest.
