I think you usually should bet on the flop with this hand - or if you think you can thin the field a little by checkraising, try that.

However, in this particular case I don't think your opponent was folding his flush draw. I mean, a guy who doesn't fold 8-4s before the flop isn't going to fold a flush draw with two cards to come, is he?

Yeah, he wasn't gonna fold his flush draw to one more bet. So even though you should have bet there you actually saved yourself a bet. I don't think check-raising works in low limit holdem. You actually allow more people in the pot by not betting out.

It's very hard to protect your hand in limit. And usually people are getting the proper odds to chase, so there's nothing you can do about it.

Check-raising to protect your hand in limit is most successful when the initial better will be to your right. For example, you're first to act and everyone checks it around to the button who bets. You raise that bet and force everyone else to call 2 bets cold which lowers their odds a great deal. Now they might not have the correct odds to call where they would have had them before. It's even more successful if you manage to do it on the turn, where the bet size doubles.

If the initial better is going to be to your immediate left, check raising isn't useful for defense (although it will be useful for pot building.) It'd be better to bet out and hope someone raises, forcing everyone else to call 2 bets cold and *hopefully* get improper odds.

To the OP: In this case it wasn't going to matter if you bet out or checked.
