So, I'm a big fan of Gus - been watching him play on the Omaha Hi tables. But here's a hand that I just don't get. I can see why he might call to see the flop, but the post flop play just doesn't make sense to me...

| If I were to try and make a justification, I'd say that Gus knew Luigi had AAxx. Post flop, I'd imagine that Gus believed the K and the T really didn't help Luigi at all. That being the case, Gus probably felt that he had enough outs where it would be more +EV to try and luck out then it was to fold since he'd have 11 outs. |

That is exactly how I saw it too. Gus plays on a different level than most can comprehend. I'll tell you one thing though. His good hands ALWAYS gets paid off, and its usually in the tune of his opponents whole stack.
Gus Hansen is also a sicko. He loves juicy action. Kind of like Manny Ramirez "just being Manny", this is a case of Gus Hansen "just being Gus" |

| When does it make more sense to consider explanations that don't start from first principles like "it's obviously a genius move, I mean come on, he's a pro"? Is it completely ridiculous to suggest that he was just being a gambling idiot? That people who will drop 100K (I don't know if Gus does this personally) on a golf match against someone with a handicap 10 strokes lower won't ever play a poker hand ridiculously? |

At times, some of the so-called best pro's will be in the mood to gamble and if the mood to do so strikes them while playing poker, then hands may get played accordingly. What is hysterical to me is how if a pro play's a hand in an unorthodox manner, it is generally considered some genious move, even if it was good old gambling because he/she felt lucky, while if any given amateur were to pull the same exact move, they would automatically be labeled a fish for the donk play. There is a double standard even in poker! |

| i watch Gus play pretty regularly..he is a very very loose aggressive he will play any hand any time for any ammount. That being said, he does get some bonuses for playing in this manner. He gets his monsters paid almost all the time, and when one of those junk hands hits big he usually gets paid off nicely too. Plus Gus is a luckbox and has the roll to play this style. Its way to crazy for my blood but he gets his monsters paid off alot more than guys like Brian Townsend and Patrik Antonius. Its really hard for any of us to say why he does something in one instance. He may have had a read based on past hands or something. |

Sure that's true. However does that really pertain to this situation? There's not a whole lot of this hand history that screams unorthodox. |

My commentary was actually more in support of, as well as elaborating on Jobe's post, in regards to pro's and gambling. |

That's my entire point. Everybody automatically assumes there's a method to the madness, because they have no information either way, and won't just admit that they don't know if he's donking or doing something brilliant. A little humility, folks. |

I can't say I know Gus well enough to know the true reason of this hand. However, if I can make a completely legitimate and mathematical reasoning behind every action, I'm more inclined to say it's more brilliance than donk. |
