There are some players that absolutely hate that hand, especially in early position. It isn't considered a premium hand, as a matter of fact it ranks about in the third tier if it's offsuit, and yes, it CAN be a trouble hand. Personally I hate the hand as it has usually cost me way more than the hand is worth, though suited it gains a slightly stronger edge.

As for whether or not you should play it in early position, that depends on chip count, table image, number of players at the table, the chip average, whether the table is overall loose or tight, aggressive or passive, etc. etc.

At a full table, especially if it's offsuit, I will most times muck this hand but play it once in a while if I can either 1. see a cheap flop with it or 2. I have a strong table image and I can pick up a pot then and there with it.

If I enter a pot with this hand and there is a substantial raise behind me, I don't much have a problem with laying it down in early position.

it is a troublesome hand, but if you play it aggressively preflop, you can usually win the blinds and antes from early position. but if you lose big with this hand, dont worry about it, phil freaking ivey has lost in two (or more) WPT events with this hand, lol.

AQ from early position is fine, but if you have any reraises on the back side, AQ doesnt play well against many hands for a good reason. Obviously AK kills it. If Ace hits the flop you are doomed. However, AQ is a hand that wont get you far because it is almost impossible to make a profit out of it. If you are against AA you are doomed as with AK. IF you are against KK, ok you still have 3 outs, still nothing good. If you are against KK and Ace hits (pending you didnt get it all in preflop)...you wont recieve any action if the player has any brains at all. AQ doesnt go well against QQ, because again..if ace hits the flop..blaw blaw blaw..same with JJ. Unless you get all your money in preflop, the only hand you might play well against is JJ and that is if you want to put your tourny stack down a crap chute. I mean think about it...the only real action you can get on it is if you have AQ vs AK and hit your A, and then pending no miracle outdraw..you lose.

All of the above is true, but most of the time, you're not up against AK, AA, or KK - especially not in low limit games. A raise means little, and even a reraise does not always mean a premium hand. Many low stakes players reraise with hands like AT and AJ, hands that you have dominated. AQ is a good hand and should be played as such. You should certainly be cautious, but you can't always be afraid of the worst case scenario.

As for profitablity, it should be a profitable hand for you - if it's not, something's wrong. I for one make an average of .72 big bets per hand with AQs, and .62 with AQo - and that's at limit, no less. Nothing spectacular, certainly, but nothing to complain about.

Hello.

I play a lot of online poker. In approximately 17 months I have profited 3600+ playing mostly $1,$2,$3, and $5 multi table tournies on about 8 different sites. I have also won 12 multis since I won my 1st last
November.
AQ IS A MONEY PIT, the only time it's good are like some1 else said if you flop an ace or Q or have a strong table image and can bluff your way to a win.
There are three hands I dont like to see late in a tournament, or more importantly like to play for big pots against players that could cripple me. They are AQ QQ and JJ. TT also sucks.

Thank you, and have a nice day
