e.g. you have ATs flop comes 2 of your suit, should i check to see the card as cheaply as possible or should i bet to get more money in the pot.

What about when there's 8 people in the hand compared to 3?

I generally play low limit so folding chances are low for most players.

cheers.

If you're first to bet, and you know that most of the field will stay in the hand, and you'll get the proper pot odds, sure.

1. It'll give you control of the hand. If the turn doesn't help your hand, you may very well get a free card out of it because people will check into you from your strong action on the flop. Then again, this is low limit, so anything may happen.

2. When you do nail the nuts, that one bet will dramatically increase the profits on the hand.

3. (unlikely in lowlimit) You may in fact cut down the whole field on that bet or combined with a bet on the turn, taking the pot without having to gamble on the draw.

In limit, betting your draws is often a good move, if you know that you will be getting pot odds on your bet. It can also be used to ensure that you have pot odds to continue to draw on the turn, if you don't hit. However, I would usually do so only from late position, or against very loose players.

The only thing I'd add is this: If you are on the button, you might as well check it down. Otherwise you open up the betting for a raise and reraise. But from up front in a passive game, I'd bet in a heartbeat.

Also, if there are 8 people in the hand, you don't need to bet to give yourself the pot odds to continue, especially since someone will most likely bet for you....
