I would like some advice about advancing my ability in stud hi and stud hi/lo. I consider myself quite gifted in the ability to read situations well, and poker has been good to me. disregarding the $100,000,000 i have gottan sucked out on over the past 3 years on full tilt poker, i have learned alot. I started playing at the miniscule limit hold'em tables, then advanced to no limit, and played for the first 2 and a half years of my poker career playing and advancing and perfecting my no limit hold'em game. over the past 6 months i have been broadning my horizons, and have taught myself few other games. i am now quite confident in both my Omaha Hi and Omaha hi/lo abilities, which i have been working on for about 4 months of that last 6, and am finally able to really play. My OH8 ego was boosted when i cashed in the FTOPS Event #1 OH8, which was the only FTOPS event i played this time around, and i made 16th out of 624 for $998.40, all from a $54+3 satilite. the past two months i have been playing $5 buyin razz tournaments, and some of the 1800 man freerolls, just to develope a feel for the game. im starting to get quite confient in my razz as well, although not 100% yet. My major problem is, i have been starting to get interested in HORSE tournaments and i keep having problems with them. This afternoon i joined a $5+.50 HORSE tournament, and played as well as i could
after playing through the limit hold'em, limit OH8, and razz, i was sitting with just over 2400, and was sitting in the top 10. Then stud came along, followed by stud hi/lo, and crippled my stack right down to 1575. Lucky me, i picked up a very big pot as limit hold'em came back around, and then beefed up again in omaha, and went back to a more comfortable stack of about 3600 when i hit razz. i played through the razz and was able to cap off my stack to about 5100 after picking up a nice sived pot on a 6'4'. Then the studs came along and crucified my stack. I would just like to get some advice on how to advance my stud game, because in this situation stud ended up busting my stack 23rd out of 120 when 16 got payed. Good luck at the tables, thanks for all the help!

All you probably need to know is that the conflicts that show up in seven card stud usually boil down to made hand versus made hand (the median winning hand is approximately two pair, whereas the requirements are a little lower in holdem). If you make adjustments to your betting based on this fact, you'll be fine. It took me a long while to figure this out, but it affects everything - starting hands, speed of play, and nowadays, how to play when multiple opponents are pointing their guns at you.

The other piece you'll have to get used to is the fact that positional aspects of the game are no longer pure. In holdem/omaha, the difference between early/late position and how they affect your bottom line reward those that understand its intrinsic value. In stud, the possible advantage you can build for yourself are no longer in play (often high pair versus lower pair, with high pair at a positional disadvantage) and so you must again adjust accordingly (see if you can trap more, and cultivate an image that allows you to do this).

At the end of the day, though, keep in mind that you've already been playing one of the best games - holdem. The dynamic range of things you can do in holdem is large (particularly in no-limit) and will tend to make you feel handcuffed in these "other" games. There is less you can do when over half of your hand is turned up for all to see - and it's important to keep this all in mind when thinking about how to take money from a table.

So it's good to hear that players are migrating to the world of seven card stud. It's a deeply rewarding game, with lots of twists and turns, and learning the three variants (stud is the stern complicated grandparent, stud 8 is the wild child, and razz the sleepy one) will only make you better. In fact, I didn't appreciate some of the subtleties found in holdem until I had run away to the stud games. For this alone, taking a look around is a good thing - promiscuity with your Poker turns out to be a good thing.

Why do you make threads so long, it's not like people read them all.

By the way, does anyone know what time the train leaves Grand Central Station on December 14th, I think it connects to the USK on 5th Street but I'm not sure.

Christel meth is the best, everything else is just a toy.

Peace. Very Happy

the best advice i can give you about stud hi-lo is don't play hands that can only go low. they look like good hands for razz but they're bad for stud hi/lo. 7-3-2 offsuit for example. you want to play hands that can potentially scoop the pot. An Ace is very valuable. its all about aces and middle cards are the devil. todd brunson wrote you should play three big, three little, but never three in the middle.

It's like Todd Brunson talks about in Super/System 2...

In terms of Stud Hi/Lo, scoop the pot. That's the rule that separates good players from bad ones. Scoop the pot. That's the one thing bad players don't realize.

You can shot for a low hand if you're in a multi way pot and ev1 else is going for the high side. If you hold 236 for example and the door cards of your ops are all 9 or higher then go for it. The key is it has to be multiway. No sense in playing for half a heads up pot.
