Normally at a full table, I hate playing suited connectors like they are goldmines, mostly because theyre not, and it's pretty easy to overplay them, to no result. But I was at a table where there wasn't a lot of preflop raising, and there were typically 5 to a flop. In these situations, suited connectors can be goldmines if they hit.
Pre-flop: (10 players) Hero is UTG+2 with 6 7
2 folds, Hero calls, 2 folds, MP3 raises, CO folds, Button calls, 2 folds, Hero calls.
I wasn't delighted about having to pay a full bet to see the flop, but c'est la vie. I was playing pretty tight, so I assumed MP3 would have a big hand to raise my limp. A pretty bad start really, I might have picked this hand up at just the wrong time.
Flop: 3 9 5 (7.5SB, 3 players)
Hero checks, MP3 bets, Button calls, Hero calls.
Excellent, I have a double gutshot, any 4 or 8 will make me a straight, and it won't be very easy to spot at all. Shame there's no ace lying around really. I prefer the check/call here as I'm OOP and drawing to a monster. I should be able to extract greater value later on in the hand if I hit.
Turn: 4 (5.25BB, 3 players)
Hero checks, MP3 bets, Button calls, Hero raises, MP3 calls, Button calls.
Woo, a 4. Thats a third spade on the board, so I need to be slightly careful of a flush, but I don't think thats realistic from the action so far. I'll go for the C/R here I think, there's no reason for MP3 not to bet.If a spade comes on the river then I guess I'll be beat, but it's only a 20% shot, so it's acceptable risk.
River: 5 (11.25BB, 3 players)
Hero bets, MP3 calls, Button folds.
Interesting card. Now what could my opponent have here? Overcards or an overpair have to call a bet, but if he had say 99, then I am going to have to call an extra one if I bet out, he could even have a made flush. On balance I think I'm still ahead, so I'll bet out.
Results:
Final pot: 13.25BB
Hero showed 6 7
MP3 mucks K K
He actually folded KK, an overpair which was in the range I put him on. I'm pretty happy with the way I played the hand overall. I wasn't delighted that I had to pay a full bet to see the flop, but if I had missed I could easily have thrown it away. And postflop I don't think I could have played it any better. I even avoided my bad habit of donkbetting |

Nice hand...
Well played, too bad the 3rd spade came, or you would have probably gotten extra bets out of MP3 with his Kings...
Suited or unsuited connectors usually make for big pots when you hit your straight and are easy to play as long as you can get away from them when you miss your draws.
Can you can get away from the same hand when the Flop comes: 3h9s7h giving you middle pair. I am fairly certain that you can fold this, but I thought I should mention this for discussion.
I see many people play back in the situation mentioned above(me included) thinking that MP3 is raising and C-betting with his AQ or AK... |

I think it's absoloutely essential you can lay down your hand if you dont flop what you're looking for. I wanted 2pair, a straight or flush draw or better in that hand, and I would have folded top pair.
Having said that, liming in, a c/r on the flop followed by leading the turn is likely to scream set at your opponent whether you have one or not, so if I know my opponent is capable of laying down AK/AQ then it's a play I sometimes like to make. I've seen that work against some opponents and fail against others, so it's not a move I like to make without having seen them hit the fold button and being fairly sure they will fold. |
