Hey, my second post on this. Didn't bump the old one because I wanted to run a poll. I have narrowed it down: Theory of Poker or HE: for Advanced players.
Ok, so which would you recommend as the best book to start with? I am playing mostly low stakes NLHE but also starting to get into Omaha. Either way I will probably buy the other book next. But should I get one specifically for HE, being my main game or be better off with just a general poker book?
Having already played for while, and knowing all the basics (position, pot odds, impled odds etc) - i'm just worried Theory of Poker won't teach me anything new - can anyone confirm/deny this? |

| I'd say definitely start with Theory of Poker. I haven't read it, but I have read Hold 'em for Advanced Players. I think Hold 'em for Advanced Players is weighted towards people that have already been reading and they definitely move quickly. I'm wishing I had read Theory of Poker first. |

Check and see what Holdem for Advanced Players includes--it might be just limit holdem which will help your NL game a bit but not nearly as much as a book targeting NLHE.
In addition if you want to play multiple games a holdem book isn't going to help you a whole lot, except for the general theory parts, which are all in Theory of Poker.
How many books are you willing to buy? What have you read already?
I wouldn't be afraid to buy several books. Maybe add SS2 to your list along with a couple of the new NL books and a book on Omaha. |

| Theory of Poker will have you thinking like a pro. I would then pick up Phil Gordon's Little Green Book. A **** load of info, broken down for all to understand. |

Theory of Poker. Easy choice for 95% of people here because 95% shouldnt have read Hold Em for Advanced Players because they are not advanced players.
The same is true for HoH, it's a really good book if you understand it, or even some of it. I made the mistake of reading it before I was an advanced player or even close and made some truly hideous mistakes by wrongly applying concepts I had misunderstood due to my stupidity and noviceness, I know other people have too.

Theory of Poker.
I have read ToP, but haven't read Hold 'em for Advance Players yet. (Maybe I'll get it for Christmas!) ToP is not an easy read. It's not for beginners. But, from what I understand, Hold 'em for Advanced Players is even more...er...advanced. Yeah, so I would start with ToP and then Hold 'em for Advanced Players. Actually, I would start with something easier if you're just starting out, but I'm assuming you've read other books. |

| I'm pretty sure HPFAP is strictly a limit book, so I voted for ToP. Even if you might know all or most of the basic stuff that's in there, I'd be surprised if you didn't run into an eye opener or two while reading it. |

Thanks for all the replies folks. Really helpful advice (in life/finances i'm a terrible decision maker - wich makes it strange that I play poker and tournament chess). ToP was the clear, outright recommendation from everyone so I have ordered it today. Thanks again for everyones input.
On a side note: One of my first posts on this forum was asking about books vs experience. Got a really mixed reply to that one - some people saying read then deposit, others saying deposit then read. Well, I deposited first and have been grinding away for a few months and will now do the 'theory'. I feel that this way should work quite well, because from playing first have already learned what not to do and will also me more tuned/aware to the ideas/concepts in books. |

Holdem for ADV players is a general book on holdem. It discusses strategies that can be applied to any form of holdem, not specific to limit or no limit. |

| Get Theory of Poker. Also get HoH books and NLHE Theory and Practise. Theory + Practise is awesome, and with the addition of the others will be the start of an impressive poker library. |
