| I suck at reading players online. This is why I am no good at NL holdem online. In live games (tournies only - not cash games) I am a decent player. I dont have tons of experience in large tournaments and have never cashed in one, but in small/medium sized tournies I do quite well. I have won my fair share of them and cash more often than not. The reasons are that I have good instincts on when I can pull off a bluff, or when the opponent is bluffing me. I do this mainly by how they react physically or if I can goad them into talking not previous betting patterns, unfortunately I am unable to pick up these tells online. So other than betting patterns are their any general tells I can get online? I would really appreciate any input on this because my suckage at online NL is beyond explanation. |

I wouldn't base an entire read off of this, but the speed with which players make/call bets (at least below 1/2) could give you great insight into the strength of their hand.
For instance, if your bets are called quickly on the flop and on the turn, be wary of a drawing hand. Also, if you check to the preflop raiser on the flop and he bets as soon as you check to him, he may just be making a continuation bet.
The chat box can also be your friend when you play online. Now, I advocate against initiating conversations at the table (unless you're in the company of familiar faces), but if people are talking as you play, pay close attention to the messages they type. If you find somebody always making grammatical/spelling errors, they are either young or "dim". Therefore, they may be a bit wild/wreckless like many youngsters out there, so take advantage of their lack of fundamentals.

Betting patterns, IMO, are the best way to decipher what your opponent is holding. The "tells" that I mentioned above are merely secondary "helpers", and you really should consider betting patterns first. By all means, incorporate the ability to pick up tells in your game, but all I'm saying is that they shoudn't be a major part of a make-or-break situation. |

Agreed.
I've managed a few successful bluffs and picking off some bluffs because of bettng patterns. Especially when incorporated with some sort of notes on the player. I also know I've been picked off a few times because I occassionally run into someone who picks up on my betting patterns. (I make a note of them and pay more attention to mixing it up with them.)
Betting patterns also work live and become even more powerful if you can get other tells on your opponents. |

I also find it hard to read players, and I can't memorize all the betting patterns. However, I have a different strategy now. For the entire game, I try to predict every single player's cards for every single hand. It keeps my head in the game, and it keeps me attentive to how everyone is playing and betting. I find that when I do this, I simply get a "feel" for players' styles. I don't have to remember every bet they ever made (at least not consciously). As long as I am paying careful attention, I think my subconsciousness factors in. I like to try to predict the cards because it gives me confidence when I'm correct, and when I'm wrong, I can see how certain players deviate from my strategy. I can then tailor my strategy to take advantage of their strategies. Plus, by doing this, I really don't have to remember every single bet or every hand. I get a more general picture of a player's style, and then it feels like intuition when I "know" what they have.
Also, put your opponents on a range of hands. As the betting proceeds, you can narrow that range down. I was playing a $5 SnG the other day, and I suckered this guy when I had trips. After losing the hand, he replied, "I put you on XX" where XX was ONE specific hand. I thought to myself, how stupid. There are several hands I would have played the same way. |
