|
|
I've been offered a job in Jacksonville Florida. I am a young guy and don't mind working alot of hours so I was considering going to a dealer school in Jax and working on the casino boat as like a 2nd source of income.
I have no idea how much dealers make or anything so I was hoping someone that actually does it for a living could fill me in on the details. |

| Dealers make about 17K a year... They do not make much at all. It also depends on how high of stakes you are dealing and your experience. You dont have to go to school to be a dealer. Dealers in casinos are entry level jobs. I looked into this. I am thinking about moving down to AC soon. |

I thought you had to go to dealer school to get licenced? The same way bartenders have to.
I've looked into the schools and they are 6 week cources for the most part and they train you in the games that you wish to deal.
Pretty sure you do have to get licenced to work at a casion though, i'd look more into it if I were you, but thanks for the other information. |

we had at our local college a special room where people learned how to run the casino games, I think the Casino paid for it.
think of it like getting trained |

I'm not a dealer but have friends who are. With tips a dealer in a large cardroom such as Hawaiian Gardens, Commerce, and some Vegas casinos average around 40k/yr. A smaller cardroom would likely be less and smaller stakes would likely be less. Alternatively, if you're experienced, charismatic (without gabbing too much), and professional, you're likely to make more as well as get a shot at dealing higher stakes. I know plenty of dealers who well exceed 40k/yr.
As for dealer's school. It's up to the casino. If you've never attended school but can deal a variety of games, have experience, etc. school is unnecessary. However, there is more to dealing than people think. There are many small things to consider such as how to shuffle, how to display money on the table for the cameras as well as expose the palms of your hands when dispursing chips, quickly keeping track of side pots, making sure the players are clear when they make a bet, raise, etc., (an example being playing with $2 chips, someone says I bet 10 - do they mean chips as in $20 or just $10) and controlling the table in the event of a disagreement which will inevitably take place. You have to be very thick-skinned as players will give you a lot of flack. Your body and hands/wrists get sore from the same motion time and time again. I don't mean to deter you from this profession, but realize it may not be the glamour and glitz it sounds. It take a lot of work. If you're new I would suggest attending a school then practicing as much as you can on your own. Deal home games, etc. Good luck. |

| My cousin was a dealer here in Michigan and now lives in vegas. She made about 18k a year at Soaring Eagle casino here, then jumped ship to Vegas with 4 other dealers. They all work at the Bellagio and in 2005 she said she made over 45k. They still pay nothin out there, but since the limits are all higher out there, the tips are higher, and therefore more money. She said a few months ago her shift one night made over 45k in tips alone when "the big game" was goin. |

Table game dealers at Foxwoods make $4/hr and average about $12-$14 on toke, which of course is all the tips divided evenly. That puts them at about $35,000, with top dealers at $7.50/hr making over $40k. Mohegan Sun is similiar. A table dealer at Harrah's in Atlantic City said they are making about $12/hr in toke. Poker, as i understand, pays less in toke. Some poker rooms divide their own tips seperate from the rest of the casino; other casinos split between all dealers, regardless of what they deal.
