Played in the $5 HORSE last night. About 145 entrants. I made the mistake of getting invloved in some big pots way too early on(don't recommend that ) not sure why, just ended up not being able to give up the hands. Anyways, got short-stacked after about an hour or so down to 500 chips, managed to double up a few times on some really big hands that started out good and got even better with a great flop in LHE and rolled T's in stud hi. Got my chips up to around 3,500 but by the time I did the chip leaders were somewhere around 16k to 20k and the limits and or blinds were so high that my stack was one of the shorter ones. In these fields (horseplay) of around 150 or so players, is it merely luck or is there also a lot of skill in any of your opinions? I think that it is both but once you get down to where i was you have to make a move and get lucky no doubt. I saw a lot of players get huge chipstacks by just getting really lucky. Just wondering. It went on longer than I thought it would. Oh, I ended up getting 19th out of 145 which I guess is okay. $ payed at 16th or better. It was pretty fun but long. Same old thing though: Lots of NLHE players that don't play LHE that well, bad 08 players playing lame lows with no high potential, bad razz players chasing with no hope, and stud8 players chasing nothing but weak lows. Always see a few LAG players that build up huge stackdes only to squander them very fast. Too bad they can never hold onto chips.

I think in HORSE it must be a almost must to play tight, when I try to mix it up early i get spanked everytime.

when the fields are smaller it is quite doable to make a comback and win, i have done it a few times. but in a field your size it takes a miracle.

I concur. I have done the best playing tightly. I guess that can go for any tourney or S&G for me, except a 6 max table that is. Just a few hands that I decided to call on I got hands that wer tough to get away from. That is problem with playing hands that you should not start with, if you improve a littel it is sometimes hard to get away from them.
