There are plenty of sites that will tell you how to play O8B, but actual strategy, you won’t find much. You're better off getting a book. If you're looking to improve your horse game I recommend getting Phil Hellmuth's book, 'Play Poker Like the Pros'. It covers all the games, and is great for beginners.
Basically, in O8B, you're looking for:
- 4 cards that work together
- Hands with A2 in it, preferably with 2 other cards that work
- Premium pair with either a 2 or 3 with it
And like PLO, hands that are double suited, like Ad 2d Js Ts, are stronger than hands that aren't double suited.
In O8B you're looking for hands that give you a shot at scooping the pot (winning both the high and low). It's hard to break even in O8B unless you occasionally scoop some pots. |

In Omaha 8, you're looking for hands that scoop (already been said), and want to avoid hands containing many cards in the range of 10-7, as these hands have little chance of winning either, and if they do win the high, there is almost always going to be a low. Hands containing A-2 and a backup low card are some of the best (such as A-2-3-K), as they can make both strong high and low hands. Also, hands with A-A are only strong when accompanied by a 2 or a 3, while hands such as A-A-7-J are pretty ragged hands (unless doulbe suited, then you are shooting for high, and pretty much high only).
Remember, in a multi-handed game, you need to either have the nuts (hopefull on both sides) or be drawing to them. The worst you can do is stick in a hand with just the 2nd nut low, and lose the entire pot, or at best get quartered. |
