I was wondering what types of questions you ask before you decide whether you're going to bet, call, fold etc... More and more I'm trying to make it a point of asking myself questions before I make a decision such as:

- What's my opponent's chip stack like relative to the avg. and my own?
- How many players left to act and what do their chip stacks look like?

what other types of questions would you guys add to these or better yet, what process do you use?

what do I think my opponent has? What does my opponent think I have? What does my opponent think I think he has?

emoney said it best, although the last question can get a little complicated. The most important is "what do i think my opponent has?"
Example......you have 99 and limp, then button raises and you call.
Say the flop comes A 9 2 rainbow. If you think your opponent has a high ace, you want to bet here so he can raise you. If you think he is a little loose and could be raising with anything (like a small pair), you may want to check and then induce him to bluff.
Usually, at least in NL, i always first ask myself after the flop "do i have the best hand."
If they answer is yes, then i ask "how can i maximize my winnings with the best hand without allowing myself to be (correctly) outdrawn"
Finally, usually by the river, i ask "what would my opponent expect me to do here"

Two questions I like to ask myself:

1. Is this guy/s going to pay me off if I make a big hand?(slowplay/fastplay)

2. Can I steal this pot if I miss my hand?

It depends if we're talking about tournament or cash games. The original poster talked about chips stacks, sizes, things like that, in a cash game I pay very little attention to chip stacks unless there is a small stack that I think is basically pot-committed and is going to push with anything on the next card.

In a cash game I think a little differently based on whether I have a made hand or am on a draw.

With a made hand:

What does my opponent have? Do I think they have a made hand or are they on a draw?
What would they bet/check/call with here that I have beat?
Do I even want them to call a bet I make, if they are on a draw do I want to give them just barely the wrong odds to call, or do I want to give them horrible odds and risk them folding? Or is the pot decent and I should just try to take it down here? Should I check behind them and see if a scary card hits and then bet the turn hard if it doesn't?

If I'm on a draw:

What does my oppponent have? TPTK? Set?
How good is my opponent? If I raise in position on a draw is he going to re-raise me or is it going to buy me a free card? Also if I raise in position is that going to give me credit for a big hand where I can steal the pot?
If I hit my draw are they going to pay me off? (implied odds)
