As many of you know, new legislation has been proposed with the intent of making it difficult or impossible for U.S. citizens to participate in any form of online gambling, including online poker.

I've read most of the other posts on this forum concerning this issue, and the general concensus seems to be that the legislation will never get passed. I've read arguments that say the online poker industry is too powerful and won't allow this to happen. Well here's a news flash for those of you who believe that..... None of the online poker rooms are within the United States, therefore they have little or no voice in U.S. policies. The closest you come to that is the fact that Antigua filed a complaint against the U.S. with the World Trade Organization citing that our policies constitute unfair discrimination against Antiguan businesses that are engaged in online gambling.

And for those of you who simply believe that legislation of this sort will never pass..... remember that most of the citizens of this country didn't want to give up their alcohol, but we still went through Prohibition. If we (collectively) sit on our hands and convince ourselves that we don't have to do anything because the law will never pass anyway, it probably will.

So here's a way that each and every one of you can take about 30 seconds of your time to do your part and help prevent a ban on internet poker. Cardplayer.com has a short form you can fill out that will automatically send an e-mail to the Congressmen and Senator for your jurisdiction urging them to vote against this and any similar legislation.

Here's the link: http://www.cardplayer.com/barry-blog/?id=106

Please do your part and take just a few seconds to tell your representatives how you feel. Then ask your friends and family members to do the same.

On the same page, there's a link to a very interesting article that explains (in plain English) the clauses in the proposed legislation. Since they can't actually shut down businesses that are outside the U.S., the legislation proposes to prevent us from gambling through banking laws and by forcing our ISP's to deny us access to any site engaged in gambling of any kind. I urge all of you to become familiar with this legislation, because it would infringe on our rights and our privacy if passed.

Surely your enjoyment at the tables is worth a few seconds of your time!

Suite, that was just the nicest thing to say! Thanks for the biggest smile I've had today Very Happy

More importantly, though..... thanks for helping the cause. I know that if our Congressmen and Senators start receiving tens of thousands of e-mails about this, they will at least have to give it some serious attention. Things get done when our representatives start worrying about their re-election.

As for the tourney..... I can't make any promises. Right now my internet connection is so unstable that I can't even play. Our neighbor's electric fence is causing so much interference on our phone lines that I can't get a connection at all most of the time. But if we can get it straightened out in time, I'll do my best to be there!

I sent my letters out through the Poker Player Alliance website. Here's the link for more info. Raymer, Ferguson, Lederer just returned from Washington where they testified to Congress about John Kyl's bill. If the big boys can travel to Washington to fight for this cause, then the least we players can do is push a few buttons on a computer.

Did mine through the players alliance website too.

Got a form letter back from Senator Kennedy and a personalized message back from Rep Tierney, and extended dead silence from Senator Kerry.

Might be worth blasting a note or two to the Texans in Congress asking why they're trying to make that great game illegal.

I did this, and one of the senators responded....here it is word for word....

Thank you for taking the time to contact me regarding Internet gambling.

I appreciate the arguments you make in opposition to legislation that would limit Internet gambling and will keep them in mind should such legislation come before the Senate for a vote. Currently no Senate legislation has been introduced; however as you note two bills have been introduced in the House: H.R. 4411, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2005 and H.R. 4777 Internet Gambling Prohibition Act. H.R. 4411 would principally seek to end payments made to Internet gambling site operators through credit card companies and other financial services companies while H.R. 4777 principally would update the Wire Act to take into account the use of the Internet medium for gambling purposes and authorize additional law enforcement funds.

Thank you once again for contacting me. If I can be of further assistance to you in the future, please do not hesitate to contact me again.

Sincerely,
Norm Coleman
United States Senate

There's actually some pending legislation in Canada also that can cause problems for online poker. Just a thought.
