would 5 top 75 finishes in a row be good results?or since i didn't finish in the money mean i didn't really do anything good?

Depends on the size of the tourneys.

Some people will say that finishing just out of the money is the same as finishing in dead last. Yeah, you win the same amount of money, but c'mon.

For pros who know what they're doing, and travel from tourney to tourney, that might be true. But for most people going deep in a tourney and not making the money is better than going out very early.

- Poker is fun. Nobody wants to spend $5/10/20 and bust 10 minutes into a tourney. Where's the fun in that?

- The more you play the better you get. Practice makes perfect. You can't make the money until you figure out how to go deep first.

If you're playing tourneys with large fields (350-400+) than 5 top 75's in a row is not bad. It says you're at least on the way to making the money.

What site was this? I can't imagine ANY site having tournies with 1800 players that pay out fewer than top 75. 180 would be far more likely, at the minimum. Please don't embellish the story to make yourself look better - none of us care.

Could also be that he was playing freerolls.

To answer the original question it just depends on the buyin, the style of play, if you're playing a freeroll then you can usually fold your way to the top 10% because everyone is playing like an idiot early on but you won't make the money which is sometimes the top 2%.

Ah. I apologize - I drew a hasty conclusion and was very rude.

Top 75 five times in a row is alright, but being that it's a freeroll you can't really use it to measure how good of a tournament player you are. You might be good, but drawing that conclusion based on how you perform in freerolls is not a good overall indication of whether or not you're a good tournament player. It's pretty impossible to tell until you get to the point where people are actually trying because they've bought in for actual money.

Someone may have covered some of this, but...

If you're getting around 75th out of 1800 in a freeroll with a mixed environment of players, (from the better to the terrible), I think it would be fair to say that you have patience and choose your hands, which is a positive thing, or, that you are lucky. If you feel you're not just getting lucky to get to that point, then it sounds like you're doing okay. Better than the people that bust out hand one, better than the people that play weak hands early, better than those with no discipline/patience, and possibly better than some of the fair/good players.

In my experience, just blinding out will get you around 300th, so getting around 75th multiple times means you're doing something correct along the way. Of course, it means you may be doing something consistently incorrect since you haven't pushed past that number, and you might have to look to that.

Good luck out there.

if this were real money tourneys that would be amazing results from fields of 1800+ but in freerolls everyone screws around and at least 1/4 of the field are gone by the end of the first level

I think you are being overpowered by better players near the middle to end of the tourney.Start calling more(especially bubble time). You have to gamble a bit to win nearing the end.I had no problems making last 100 out of a field of 15 000 in a freeroll. But when I got there I was tapped out as I concentrared on making it and folded good hands.Just play more.If you lose oh well there will be others. If I am wrong Sorry but I am guessing you just need to get in more hands.I'm not saying to play garbage but be more selective.Don't get into hands with more than 3 callers.Don't call all ins(force them) and never forget to read the board.use the 4 color deck.It will spot the flushes for you and saves time.

I would say the best way to see where you stand is to make a small deposit and start playing small sng's or maybe some micro limit tourneys. Try to build a nice bankroll too see where you stand.
