.25/.50 NL Holdem
UTG +1 with 4c 4h
I call BB
Seat 8 raises to 1$
Button calls
SB and BB fold
I call
3 players in 3$ in the pot
Flop Jh 4d 10h
I check (not sure if I should have bet out here to drive out a flush draw)
Seat 8 checks
Button bets 2$
I hit bet pot and raise to $9.25 into a $5 pot
Button fold.
Seat 8 is a semi-loose player and the button is strait up loose though not the a maniac. I can't help but feel I totaly screwed up getting the most out of this hand but I didn't wan't someone chasing the flush. What would you have done to play this differently, or would you have? |

Always bet your sets... always... the only exception should be if you have AA and the flop came A94 rainbow, with no flush draws or straight draws present.
because if someone takes a free card and hits their flush you're going to have to lay it down, and if you dont.... uh oh.
and plus someone might have AJ and reraise you checkraising shows too much strength, and will scare people the ONLY time i will checkraise is if there is a super scary board, and i need a lot of information.... heres an example...
if i have 44 and the flop comes all hearts.
if i just bet someone may smooth call and i will have no information. if someone is on a draw they may call, and if they have the made flush they may call.
checkraising shows so much strength i will take the pot down right then and there if no one has a flush.
Heres an example of a consequence of just checking with a set (I played this hand about 10 minutes ago... biggest screw up of the week for me).
i hold 66 in late position, I limp, and have 2 limpers in front of me.
flop comes T62 rainbow. they both check in front of me, and with no draws on the board i decide to check as well.
turn comes a 7. bad card. now 89 has me beat with the nut straight.
SB checks, guy in middle position bets the pot, i think ... crap. so i call
river is an A. SB checks, guy in middle position bets the pot AGAIN... not afraid of the ace. Im not about to fold my set but raising here would be a mistake. so i just call
he flips over 22, for bottom set. Had i led out and bet on the flop, i would have doubled up and taken his whole stack, instead i decided to check and a scare card came out. And i lost probably 150 bucks of profit because of it. (however, had he had TT, i would have saved myself money... but it still would have been the incorrect play even with a beneficial outcome)
moral to this story... almost never slowplay or go for a check raise because the times you do you may get beat by flushes/straights, or lose value/profits. |

| It's usually incorrect to slow play your sets. Espesially with a suited JT on board, I really don't want to give a free card there. If you lead out, people will be hard pressed to put you on the set and will pay you off most of the time. If everyone folds, well they obviously didn't have musch of a hand they wanted to play anyway. If you do want to go for the check-raise, you have to pretty darn sure your opponent is going to bet, and you must realise you will probably only collect that one bet. |
