| hey guys, i was just wondering what the difference in play are between a regular ring table game of stud versus tournament stud. i know in hold'em there are many different aspects in tournament play versus ring game play, so i want to learn the differences in the games in regards to stud. i'm not really sure where to start so i'll just leave this out there. thoughts anyone? |

I'm no stud expert, and i have to say i've only played a couple of stud tourneys, but here is what i have noticed:
1. Know when to let go of a hand..............7 stud can be expensive all the way to the river. Dont' become a chaser as you could end up commiting 1/3 or more of your chips in one hand.
2. Tight is right.................i like to loosen up in ring games with decent drawing hands or little pairs to see if i can hit. I know i'll get paid off if i do. but in a tourney you can't waste those precious chips every other hand. Wait till you have the goods.
3. Jam with good starting hands..............High pair split or wired or three high cards to a str8 or flush you raise and reraise the hell out of everyone. Even if only your board improves, opponents will scare off and fold if they are smart. If by 5th you don't improve and an opponent doesn't scare off, then see #1.
Now many will argue that these same strategies should be applied in ring games too. I don't disagree, but remember in a ring game you can always reload, you can't in a tourney. |

for tournament play, i have a few strategies for you...
a) release your hand if you dont improve by 4th street- even if you start with a hand like 3 to a flush, release it if you dont improve on fourth street... chasing the next few streets for flush cards will hurt you in the long run... yes, this may be a tight strategy, but i feel it is a good one...
b) when you start with something rolled up, try no to do the raising until 5th street... by implementing this strategy, you will have trapped your opponent into multiple bets by now, and he will feel that even though he may be beat, he's pot committed, and may call two more bets on the next two streets... also, by raising here, you begin to weed out any draws that others may have...
c) dont get attached to weaker two pairs- having something like queens and twos is generally not a bad hand, but in a tournament, you must conserve chips... calling off bets in order to "just look him up" when you KNOW you are probably beat is a losing proposition...
d) make others pay for their draws when you know they are on one!!! stud is a game in which many players chase their draws to the end, so if they keep check-calling your bets, dont start thinking they are slowplaying you... keep betting because they will only hit 30-35 percent of the time... if they will chase, why not build the pot?
e) try to draw to the nuts, not the second best hand |
