I sometimes lol when I see people create threads about their problems in their personal lives, but I think I'm beginning to understand why one may decide to do something like that. I've been around this forum just about every day for the last 2 years, and it's kind of a part of my life (don't lol) . Even that I've had my share of enemies and controversy, I truly enjoy getting to know alot of you, albeit only a message board relationship. I just feel the need to make this post, and you can take it for what you think it's worth.
My family has been waiting in limbo for about a month concerning a whole slew of tests on my mother. In short, she went in for some tests because of a sore back. One test lead to another, and after dozens of tests, the doctors narrowed the problem down to her femur/knee area.
I just got the news today that my mother has bone marrow cancer, and that she'll have to undergo knee replacement surgery next week. It's not all known yet, but I think this type of cancer starts its growth at a joint, and usually goes down a long bone (or the other way around). It seems that there's about a 3" long tumor at the top of her femur, which either started in her knee or is spreading to her knee. The doctors said that after they replace her knee (and see what it looks like in there during surgery), they'll know for certain what the long term issues are. They range from being in the clear the day after, to having to find out where else this cancer has spread. It's a distinct possibility that it already has spread, but they won't know until the day of the surgery.
Basically, I'm really down in the dumps, but I'm hoping for the best. I just cannot even fathom the possibility of losing my mother, as she's barely 60 yrs. old. I'll keep praying that there's good news after her knee replacement, and I hope that those of you that pray would also do so for us.
Thanks, cubbies760

She'll be fine, just keep showing support and whatnot.
My grandpa had an open-heart surgery when he was about 75 and they did a fine job. The doctors are good at what they do, thats why they get paid so much. Granted open-heart surgery isn't anything cancer related, but hopefully its re-assuring that the surgery will go fine.
I'm not too good at comforting people, but just stay strong. Cancer IS beatable, you just have to have the will-power and strength. As long as you and your family shows you believe she will get through this, then she will know she can too. Just take it one day at a time.
She'll be in my prayers. |

Prayers to you and your entire family.
A suggestion if i may.Have the entire oncology team do a team meeting before surgery and be sure that no OTHER joints are affected and may need replacement in the future, any doubts at all and ask if they can do them at the same time. I have seen cancer pts refuse future joint replacements because of the pain involved in the rehab and recovery of such opperations. |

Well, from what I know,(wich is not much) if the cancer has not spread, an amputation of the infected area may be the only option.
That said, a one legged mother is better than no mother at all.
I mean no disrespect, and am not trying to make light of this situation. Just be ready to make adjustments in all the emotions that will be upon you soon.
Wish you and your family the best. |

I didn't take it as being disrespectful, in fact, that's about what I said to my Mom about it. If the cancer is isolated to just her knee and below, I'll be absolutely thrilled. The possibility of her losing 1/2 a leg is really the least of anyone's concerns. I'll take that in a second, as compared to the alternative. |

| Sucks to hear J., as it's something I can relate to now as well. Hopefully once they get in there, things will be better than anticipated. Until then, dwell on the positives and cherish your time(present and past) with her. |

Another thing. Don't think doctors are "know it all gods" and that you should follow their advice "to the tee"
Truth is so many of them don't really care. they're numb to the things that you are new to.
Use your intelect on matters, and not blind faith.
Yea, I got issues with the med system. |

Japple-maybe this isn't the thread to start discussing your issues with the med system.
